Chapter 5: The Suicide Note
May 1942
The inquest into the sudden death of Elspeth Hunter was a short and formal affair. The verdict of “death by one’s own hand or suicide” came quickly, as did the funeral service. Vicar Crandall said a few words over the grave in the churchyard cemetery with Caroline, Leslie, and Winnie in attendance, along with many elderly villagers who knew the local resident well and remembered her acts of kindness in the past.
After the service, Flora Denton pulled Leslie aside for a few words. He looked helplessly at Caroline who immediately plunged in and dragged him away with the excuse of not feeling well and needing to get home. Fast.
