Chapter 6: Caretakers The morning after Elspeth Hunter’s funeral, Caroline woke later than usual. Had Leslie come in from night duty? She was surprised she hadn’t heard him. Caroline’s sleep patterns these days were anything but normal. She slept fitfully and was normally up and dressed and had the kettle on by the time Leslie returned from his 11P.M. to 5 A.M. shift. She was worried about him. Like her, he wasn’t sleeping well and often had nightmares that stemmed from living through the worst of the Blitz.
