CHAPTER FORTY-THREE
“I’m here.” Charlotte threw her arms around Zoe and immediately released her to inspect the ropes. “Are you alright?”
“Shh…she’s waiting for you.” Zoe whispered. “I can’t free myself.” She rattled the branch which was too high for her to reach.
Charlotte went to the end of the branch and jumped, grabbing its end. It wasn’t thick and as soon as she put weight on it, it groaned. She worked her way along, pulling it lower.
With the branch at a steep angle, Zoe managed to slide the rope closer to Charlotte.
“Watch for it falling.”
“Rather be free.”
Both women went dead weight, straining to break the branch and with a loud crack, it snapped and fell, narrowly missing Zoe. Pain replaced the fear in her eyes and she moaned as the rope dragged her arms downward.
