CHAPTER 5: Attract Attention

1055 Words
Maris was given a menu of all the dishes that needed to be prepared this morning. She feels uncomfortable working with other people, she just wants to work alone without being disturbed by anyone. But work was the order here. She couldn't help but submit. "This! Quickly empty that pot of dirty water. Don't leave it on the table like that, it's unhygienic." One girl was talking to another girl. The two made breakfast together with Emma and Maris. After being "reminded", the girl immediately grabbed the pot of dirty water and threw it at Maris, who was attentively arranging the salad on the plate. No one knows if it was accidental or intentional, but the dirty water in the basin almost all got on Maris' body. Her bodice was wet and stained with stains. "EH! Sorry! I did not mean to." The girl hurriedly apologized, but her face showed no trace of guilt. On the contrary, she appeared victorious. Maris looked down at her shirt and then back at the other girl. Her face remained expressionless. She didn't know why, but from the moment she got there, she felt it. All the people in this mansion hate her. Seeing that Maris still did not object, Emma stood by to witness her voice demanding justice for her friend: “What do you say? Just by accident? This place isn't cramped, you're clearly aiming for her!" "I don't. Why should I?" The other girl, despite being told so bluntly, still tried to argue back. “Is it not because you don't like her? Is it because Maris is more beautiful than you?" The two of them kept arguing back and forth until Laura stepped in to settle it before she stopped. “What's so noisy? Shut up. If you don't have time to prepare the food later, you'll understand the outcome!" With just a few words from the butler, we all shivered. Everyone knows that if the masters are not happy, their lives will be considered dead. Although the discomfort still hasn't subsided, they still have to try to suppress it to continue working. The argument quickly ended in Emmy's anger. If it wasn't for Laura, she wouldn't have been afraid to fight them. Although Maris had always treated Emmy coldly, she considered Maris her friend, her friend in this scary place. After a while, the food was also carefully placed on the table. The clock struck seven o'clock in the morning, and William and Matthew were already in the hallway leading to the dining room. This is their morning routine every day. Only Brian never had breakfast with them. For a long time, he never appeared out of the blue without Mr. John's orders. Even when he ate, he ate only lunch brought by the servants every day. Most of the time, he locked himself in his room, not communicating with anyone. “Have a nice day, Mr. Matthew!” As soon as Matthew entered the door, the servants immediately bowed their heads as usual. "You don't have to be so respectful, just relax." Matthew laughed, he didn't like those difficult rules and regulations. “Have a nice day, Mr. William!” “Do you have a new sentence? Just looking at your faces makes me uncomfortable!" Contrary to Matthew, William is extremely bored with these greetings. “Did you hear about the Zacker case?” As soon as he pulled a chair and sat down, William immediately spoke up to discuss business with Matthew. Unlike other rich young masters, the meal is also the place where they gather to discuss business. "I didn't expect him to be so bold! Dare to kill our people." As soon as he heard "Zacker", Matthew's face showed discomfort, and his eyebrows were slightly furrowed. “Let me kill him, end this. It's also for other adversaries to be wary of us." William said leisurely as he cut the steak from the plate. He doesn't like negotiating or having to pretend to be at peace with the enemy, who is always aiming for his life. "Don't act hastily, if your father finds out that you killed that guy on your own without consulting your father, he will be angry. Besides, there's another person behind that Zacker. We don't know who he is right now, so don't risk it. If we let the FBI suspect it, it'll mess things up." Hearing William's hasty intentions, Matthew immediately stopped him. Hearing that, William just silently ate. The conversation between the two brothers also stopped. The space is now completely silent. Occasionally, the sound of spoons touching the plates of the two masters could be heard. At this time, maids like Maris, including the housekeeper Laura, were standing in a long line beside them, waiting to serve the two masters. Matthew suddenly looked at the long line of servants standing beside him. There were more than ten people. Although he knew it was their duty, he always felt uncomfortable, even if eating was not good. Suddenly, he looked at Maris, who was standing at the far end of the line. Her figure is small, so it is easy to be obscured by other girls. Her long black hair was tied neatly according to the servant's regulations, her gaunt face was clearly visible. Maris looked vaguely to one side, the other's lifeless eyes remained emotionless. Making it impossible for others to know what she was thinking in her head at the moment. Matthew put down the glass of water in his hand and tilted his head in the direction she was looking at. It's just a plain white wall, nothing special. Why was she looking so passionately? “Maris!” Matthew's soft call suddenly broke the silence. Everyone in the dining room now, including Maris, reflexively looked in Matthew's direction. Maris raised her face to look at Matthew, neither intending to answer nor to walk toward him. She stood motionless, as if waiting for him to speak. “Come here, I have something to tell you.” Matthew said as he smiled gently at Maris. Emmy, standing beside her, gently pushed Maris's arm to remind her. “Hey, the master called you. Go up there!” Maris now walked step by step closer to Matthew's place under the unfriendly eyes of the other maids.
