Gabriella stared at the message on her phone, blinking in disbelief. “Who the hell is Mark, and why is he messaging me?” she muttered. The notification had popped up out of the blue, interrupting her mindless scrolling through i********:.
“Hey there, I know this is random, but I saw your profile and thought you seemed cool. It’s Mark. Nice to meet you!” the message read. Gabbi rolled her eyes. Another unsolicited message from a random guy—how original.
“Ugh, Sam, you’ll never believe this,” she groaned, calling her best friend. “Some dude just messaged me out of the blue. Should I even bother responding?”
Sam let out an exasperated sigh. “Girl, you know the drill. Either ignore it, and he’ll go away, or entertain it and see where it goes. You never know; he could be your soulmate!” she teased.
Gabbi scoffed. “Yeah, right. Like that’s ever happened before, but I guess I’ll humor him; I’m bored out of my mind anyway.”
She typed out a short reply. “Hey Mark, nice to meet you too. What’s up?”
To her surprise, Mark responded almost immediately. “Not much, just wanted to say hi! I noticed you seemed really interesting and I’d love to get to know you better. How’s your day going so far?”
Gabbi raised an eyebrow. Okay, so maybe this guy wasn’t the typical creepy internet stranger. He seemed...normal. “It’s going alright, just the usual mundane routine. How about you?”
And just like that, the conversation flowed effortlessly. Gabbi opened up to this stranger, sharing details about her life that she normally kept under lock and key. Mark, in turn, did the same, revealing that he was a single dad to an autistic daughter named Lyric.
“Wow, that must be tough,” Gabbi said sympathetically. “I can’t even imagine how challenging that must be.”
“It has its ups and downs,” Mark admitted. “But Lyric is the light of my life. She’s the sweetest, most loving little girl, even if she struggles sometimes. I wouldn’t trade her for the world.”
Gabbi felt a pang in her chest. There was something so genuine and heartwarming about Mark’s words about his daughter. She found herself captivated, eager to learn more.
Gabbi and Mark’s conversations only deepened as the weeks turned into months. They talked about everything under the sun - their hopes and dreams, fears and insecurities, favorite movies and TV shows. Gabbi felt herself falling for this man she had never met in person, which both thrilled and terrified her.
“Ugh, Sam, I don’t know what to do!” she cried one day, burying her face in her hands. “I like him, but what if it’s all just an illusion? What if we meet in person, and it’s a total disaster?”
Sam gave her friend a reassuring pat on the back. “Gabs, you’ll never know unless you try. And from what you’ve told me, this Mark guy seems like a pretty stand-up dude. Give it a chance! Who knows, maybe he’s your soulmate after all.”
Gabbi couldn’t help but smile. “Yeah, maybe you’re right. Guess I’ve got nothing to lose, right? Time to see where this crazy journey takes me.”
Gabriella stared at the text message on her phone, her heart racing like a hamster on an exercise wheel. “Meet me at the comic book store down the street in 30 minutes. Can’t wait to see you.” It was from Mark, the guy she had been crushing on for months. How had this happened? One minute, she was drowning in her sorrows, eating ice cream straight from the tub and binge-watching “The Bachelor,” and the next, she was about to go on what she could only assume was a date.
“Guys, you’ll never believe this!” she exclaimed, bursting into the living room where her roommates, Sam and Dominic, were engaged in an intense battle of Mario Kart.
“What is it? Did you finally get fired from your salon job yet?” Sam asked, eyes glued to the screen as she frantically steered her character around a sharp turn.
Gabriella rolled her eyes. “No, you dork. Mark just asked me to meet him at the comic book store down the street in 30 minutes!”
Dominic paused the game and turned to face her, his eyebrows raised in surprise. “The comic book store? Doesn’t his best friend own that place?”
Gabriella nodded, suddenly feeling the butterflies in her stomach intensify. “Yeah, that’s the one. I have no idea what to wear! Help me!”
Sam and Dominic exchanged a knowing glance, then leaped up from the couch and dragged Gabriella towards her bedroom.
“Okay, let’s see what we’ve got in that disaster of a closet of yours,” Sam said, rummaging through the piles of clothes.
Gabriella watched nervously as her friends tossed aside outfit after outfit, muttering under their breath about her questionable fashion choices.
“Aha! This is perfect,” Dominic exclaimed, holding up a cute sundress with a floral pattern.
Gabriella eyed the dress skeptically. “I don’t know, guys. What if it’s too casual?”
“Trust us, Gabs,” Sam said, pushing the dress into her hands. “You’ll look amazing. Now, go get dressed before you’re late!”
Gabriella hurried into the bathroom, her mind racing. What was she going to say to Mark? What if he was being friendly, and this wasn’t a date? She splashed some cold water on her face, trying to calm her nerves, then slipped into the dress and stepped back out to face her friends.
“Well, how do I look?” she asked, twirling a little.
“Stunning,” Dominic declared, giving her a thumbs up.
“Now, go get your man!” Sam exclaimed, shoving Gabriella towards the door.
