*ADRIENNE'S P.O.V*
HE LOOKED PEACEFUL while he slept. Almost Angelic, and for some reason, watching him sleep made Thea calm and she purred in my head contentedly.
What was it with this guy? I wondered. He was oddly familiar, maybe it was because we had shared a traumatic experience together in the dungeons.
I remembered the doctor's words before he left, he spoke very gently to me and assured me that he had given Kincaid a dose to knock out a polar bear through 2 winters. I had chuckled at the joke, and the doctor had laughed along, but the laugh didn't reach his eyes. So as I wiped Kincaid's sleeping brow with a cool towel, I wondered if the doctor wasn't exaggerating.
The scar on my neck tingled. It had been doing that recently, like an injury that had not healed properly and still contained bad blood inside. Maybe I would talk to Amelia about it.
I sighed, Luna Amelia was also very nice. It seemed like everyone in this pack was nice and gentle. Being one of the ancient packs, They had a strong connection with nature. History has it that some of the first ever werewolves had shown up in Greenland, and then they had sailed with the Vikings during the battle against the England empire. Somehow, the wolves had settled in Scotland and started the High Moon pack, which over many centuries, had grown from a few barbaric wolves to hundreds of nature-loving, gentle -- The iron grip grasped my wrist. Apparently, there is a black sheep -- or should I say -- black wolf amongst the others.
"How long was I out for?" He growled at me. His growl made the hair on the back of my neck stand on edge.
"Uh, 16 hours," I muttered, snatching my arms away. I instinctively rubbed the wrist as he struggled to sit up. With his drunken coordination and slurpy motions, I concluded that the doctor wasn't exaggerating.
"Hey, I know that voice," he muttered. "You are the new girl the one from North London, and you were in the next cell in that prison. I recognize your voice from that cheeky quote you recited in captivity."
Thea prances around in my head. "He remembers us," She sings. What the hell is wrong with my wolf? I frown at his words. "If you're going to mock my father's last words, then you better find another nurse!" I dropped the wet towel on his chest and stormed out of the ward. I barged the door open, almost stumbling into the other man from this morning. He is Kincaid's beta called Liam.
"Woah, take it easy, princess," he said, holding me. He was part of the good-natured, gentle ones. Kincaid should take some manners lessons from him.
"He's awake," I muttered, pulling away from his hold and walking away. His gaze followed me for a while before he walked into the hospital.
I sighed, not knowing where to go.
"Let's go for a run," Thea sings in my head.
"Oh, no, we are not," I muttered. We are going to have a long talk as to why you are always content and happy around Kincaid. Most of the pack is asleep as I walk towards a park with beautiful trees.
I passed some wolves on patrol, they whistled at me to get my attention, and I nodded in response. Gratefully, they didn't bother me. I went underneath one of the trees and sat down on a bench.
"Time to have a talk," I said out loud.
"Good," a voice replied making me jump and turn. There was a slim, tall, and blonde girl standing a few feet behind me. She had the bitchy look that I was used to. At one glance at her, I knew the type of person she was. The queen of social life, the center of the cliques in this pack. She reminded me of Trixie, Alpha Jake's daughter.
She walked up to me and sat on the bench.
I lowered my eyes, not meeting her gaze. "I don't believe we have met," I said, offering a branch of mutual respect.
"I don't give a s**t about you," she snarled.
Okay, the branch of respect is not accepted. If this one thought she would come over here and try to intimidate me, then she was in for a long ride.
"What do you want?" I asked.
"What were you doing in Kincaid's ward?" She countered. "You were trying to seduce him, weren't you?"
"I was on nurse duty," I said. I noted the defensive tone in her voice. So, she wanted Kincaid for herself. She has nothing to worry about.
"Yeah right," she snapped. "What do you know about medicine? And taking care of future alphas?"
"Nothing," I answered truthfully.
"I do not want to see you anywhere near Caid," she snarled. "You hear me? He is mine." She stood up and started to walk away.
I did not have an issue with staying away from Kincaid, but I had an issue with her threatening tone. "Or else what?" I asked.
She gave a sarcastic laugh as she turned and walked back to me. "My name is Lucy," She said. "When you have the time, ask about me, okay?" She looked at me. "And I heard you are wolfless... I would tear you apart."
Unlike the doctor earlier, I did not note any exaggeration in Lucy's tone. I stood up so we were eye to eye -- almost. She was still almost 4 inches taller than me. Her eyes were cold as I stared into them.
"I will stay away from Kincaid. I never had any intention to get close to him anyway," I said. "But threaten me again, and I'll make sure you regret it."
She gave a fake, cold smile and walked away. A cool breeze washed over me, I hugged myself and sat back on the bench. A few minutes ago, I was just thinking they were all good-natured except Kincaid, but turns out, his girl was also a snotty b***h. They complimented each other in that aspect.
"Maybe I should just leave before I get into more trouble," I muttered to myself.
"No," Thea objected in my head.
What does she mean by 'no'? "What do you mean 'no'?" I asked. "Leaving now will reduce the pain, Alpha Ezra hasn't inducted us yet, we should leave before he does so." I waited, waiting for Thea's reply, but silence welcomed me.
What was it with my wolf? I asked, involuntarily scratching the scar on my neck. I stood up and walked to the packhouse, just before I entered through the front door, I turned and looked at the horizon, that was my freedom, I could just leave now. I shook my head and entered the door, gently closing it behind me. I would not be leaving today because of one encounter with a queen b***h. I am stronger than that, and I am going to show her what I am made of. I did not withstand hunger periods, maltreatment, chains, prison, and air filled with wolfsbane, only to be sent running by one spoilt teenage girl. I went up to my room and crept into my bed.
Just before I drifted into sleep, my mind flitted to my brother Finn and I wondered how he was doing.
