Olivia’s scream echoed through the palace halls, sharp and full of fear. Adrian’s heart jumped. He just ran toward her room.
Derek was right behind him, his eyes moving from shadow to shadow, his jaw tight.
“Assassin!” a maid cried, her voice shaking.
Olivia’s door swung open behind him.
She was on the floor, trembling, pale as marble.
Roman also rushed in time, he dropped to his knees and lifted her gently.
“Are you okay?” Derek asked, stepping forward, his tone was sharp but controlled.
I’m fine,” Olivia said stammering, trying to steady her racing heart. But her chest heaved and her hands shook.
“Surround the palace,” Roman ordered, his voice commanding. No one leaves this wing.”
“Where are you going?” Roman asked Adrian.
“I will help the guards chase after the assassin,”
Adrian replied and jumped on his horse.
But the assassin had vanished into the bushes.
“He couldn’t have gone far, continue the search, Adrian commanded.”
The night air at him as Adrian ran through the bushes. Shadows hid his quarry, but he didn’t falter. He found the figure moving fast, lethal in every step.
Adrian clenched his fist, his anger rising.
They clashed fists, claws and steel. Their fight was fierce, every strike calculated.
Adrian ripped the assassin’s tunic in the struggle.
Underneath, a mark glowed faintly on the man’s chest, a symbol of Claire's people. A chill ran down his spine.
Shocked by what he saw, the assassin splashed sand on his eye and slipped away, leaving only the mark behind and Adrian unanswered questions.
Meanwhile, Derek had followed Adrian and the guards quietly into the bush.
He tracked down the fleeing assassin despite knowing it was one of Claire’s men.
Before Adrian could report about the mark he saw on the assassin , Derek captured the assassin and hid him in a secret place in the palace. Hidden from others, he restrained the assassin and hurried back inside, already forming a plan.
When Adrian got to the palace, Derek was already at Roman’s side, calm and composed.
Roman’s piercing gaze landed on Adrian.
“Were you able to capture him?” Roman asked, voice low but commanding.
Adrian hesitated. “No….I didn’t, he said simply, keeping the mark he had seen a secret.
Roman nodded and left to his chambers.
Derek also turned to leave, but Adrian stopped him.
“Do you know anything about this?” Adrian asked quietly, suspicion threading through his voice.
Derek stopped, slowly he turned to Adrian. “No,” he said smoothly. “ I went to see the guards at Olivia’s chambers. Nothing more.”
But Adrian did not believe what he had just told him.
“ The assassin….they came from Claire’s territory, didn’t they, Derek asked angrily.
Derek met his gaze evenly. “How am I supposed to know that?”
Adrian looked at him in a suspicious way and left.
To stop Adrian from doubting him, he came up with a plan to gain his trust.
The next morning, Derek dragged Claire’s men, the assassin, toward the palace grounds.
Roman, Olivia, The council, the guards, palace officials, maidservants had gathered, murmurs of the previous night still lingering.
Derek raised the man by the collar, his face unreadable.
“Who sent you?” Derek demanded.
The assassin didn’t speak.
“I will ask you one last time, who gave you the order to harm the king’s chosen Luna.”
A heavy silence fell over the palace ground.
Derek’s sharp gaze swept the room. Then in one motion, he killed the assassin.
Gasps erupted.
The council’s and the palace officials whispered among themselves.
Adrian watched closely, tension knotted tight in his chest, though Derek's intentions were clear, he wanted to show loyalty, to prove he could be trusted.
Derek’s plan had worked. Adrain suspicion had erased, though only slightly.
Later that day he returned to his chambers, hoping that Adrain would finally trust him again, that sharp edge of suspicion would dull.
But across the way, Claire seethed in her territory.
Derek had gone too far. The assassin had been sent to read how strong her power is and Derek killed him, without her command.
She sends letters to Derek, summoning him to come right away. But Derek ignores all the letters..
Anger flared, but anger alone would not fix this. So she uses a strategy.
Claire disguised herself as a maid, and entered the palace, blending seamlessly as servants carried trays of evening meals through corridors. A simple dress and a lowered gaze.
She suddenly bumped into the maid she hired to poison the Alpha for him to get weak.
“Is that the king’s dinner,” she asked.
“Yes,” the maid replied.
“Have you added the powder already?”
“Not yet, I will add it to his wine when I get to his chambers, It's risky adding it in the kitchen.” The maid said, shaking from fear.
“That’s fine, I will send the dinner to his chambers myself, " Claire said and reached out for the food from the maid.
When she got to Roman’s chambers, it was momentarily empty. She uncovered the food, a roasted meat, bread, had been prepared, and a small seal of imported wine kept for the Alpha only.
From her sleeve, she withdrew a small folded parchment packet. Fine powder rested inside, pale and almost weightless.
Not and never enough to kill, just to weaken.
She opened the wine container carefully, letting only a trace of powder inside. It dissolved instantly, leaving no scent, no color and no sign of tampering.
Then she continued to Derek’s chambers.
When she stepped inside his room, her disguise no longer felt necessary. Derek’s expression hardened immediately he saw her.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said under his breath.
“You ignored my letters,” Claire said, raising his voice.
“You sent an assassin.”
“Yes, I did send an assassin, not to kill her, just to read her powers and pulse.”
“You went too far.”
“So did you,” Claire replied coldly. “killing him without my command.”
Then at that exact moment, the door creaked open.
It was Olivia.
