Chapter 6: Gifts and Secrets (Cassandra's POV) The heavy double doors of the ballroom shut with a resounding thud behind Alexander Stone, leaving a suffocating silence in his wake. The mingled emotions from the engagement banquet clung to the air—shock, confusion, resentment. But none of that mattered at the moment. I stood where I'd been all evening, rooted in place, my heart pounding far harder than I wanted to admit. Even within the security of my Omega disguise, the chaos his presence stirred could not be ignored. The curse’s aura, pulsing darkly beneath his skin, still burned in my mind's eye, entwined with the faint, hesitant whisper of a mate bond I had no intention of welcoming. The mate bond I didn’t want—couldn’t want. “Cassandra!” Before I could pull myself out of the storm inside me, Sarah’s sharp voice cracked like a whip over my thoughts. I turned, just in time to see her closing the distance between us with long, purposeful strides. Her mask of poise and control crumbled completely. Her lips were curled into a snarl, her sharp green eyes alight with fury. "You!" She jabbed an accusing finger at me, her nails glittering under the chandeliers like claws about to sink into prey. The ballroom had emptied quickly after Alexander’s dramatic exit, but Sarah evidently had no qualms about showing her anger in front of the few remaining Rivers pack members lingering near the doors. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” she hissed, her voice low but trembling with suppressed rage. Her emotions always betrayed her in moments like this—when her need for control slipped just an inch too far out of reach. Her eyes flickered toward the banquet exit, no doubt checking to ensure the Stone Pack’s delegation had truly left. Then, without warning, she lunged at me, claws extended. I didn’t flinch. Time seemed to slow as she closed the gap, but before her claws could strike, something… shifted. It wasn’t deliberate, not at first. Something deep within me stirred—my wolf, Aurora, exuding an almost imperceptible hum of power. It rippled through the air between us like a silent warning. Sarah froze mid-strike. Her hand trembled, claws half-bared, but she couldn’t move any closer. Her face contorted, confusion mixing with barely masked fear as her body betrayed her. A wave of unexplainable submission washed over her. For a fleeting heartbeat, it was as if her wolf had bowed without her consent. “What… what is this?” she whispered, her voice shaking as she stumbled back a step. I exhaled slowly, shrinking further into my disguise before the moment could unravel completely. My posture remained neutral. My honey-brown head dipped low in what could almost be mistaken for submission. “It’s nothing,” I said softly, feigning calm as if I hadn’t just stopped a Luna mid-strike without lifting a finger. Sarah’s unease disappeared as quickly as it had come, and her fury resurfaced in full force, masking whatever instinctive fear had gripped her moments ago. Her lips curled into a sneer. “Perhaps your grandmother’s treatment facility needs… reassessment.” Of course, she’d sink to such low threats. She thought she still held power over me. I kept my voice calm, chillingly so. “If anything happens to her…” I paused for effect, letting just the faintest whisper of danger creep beneath my words, “it will reflect poorly on your leadership, Luna.” Sarah narrowed her eyes but didn’t push further. She turned sharply on her heel instead, her honey-blonde hair whipping over one shoulder as she stalked away. Just as she reached the ballroom exit, the heavy doors creaked open again. Every muscle in my body stiffened. My wolf burned against my carefully constructed restraint as I felt his presence slam into the room once more. Alexander Stone. The Rivers Pack's murmuring resumed instantly, whispers of alarm and confusion rippling through the sparse crowd. If anyone noticed Sarah’s brief stumble as she quickly straightened herself, they didn’t dare comment. “I forgot to present my greeting gift,” Alexander announced smoothly, his deep voice cutting through the air like a blade. He stepped forward with an ornate box in his hands, its surface darkened with ancient wolf runes that glimmered faintly under the ballroom lights. The Rivers Pack members fell even quieter, if that were possible, their eyes fixed on the box as if it might contain the Moon Goddess’s will itself. Alexander stopped in front of me, his mask tilting slightly as his luminous silver eyes locked onto mine. "A gift for my fiancée." It was impossible to miss the way those words were deliberately emphasized, designed to be heard by every last Rivers Pack member in the room. He lifted the lid, revealing the artifact within. A radiant crystal pendant lay nestled on dark velvet. The light from the chandeliers captured its gleam, refracting into soft, dazzling hues. Gasps followed. Recognition struck the onlookers like lightning bolts. The Moonlight’s Heart. A legendary artifact, said to have been blessed by the first werewolves, known to enhance a wolf’s power and protect its bearer from dark magic. Sarah’s reaction was almost comical as the pendant’s glow reflected in her stunned, wide-eyed gaze. She masked it quickly, retreating a few steps to compose herself, but the shake in her movements betrayed her. Jane, who had been lingering near the edges of the room, couldn’t hide her jealousy any longer. Her composed mask cracked. Her lips parted in disbelief, and she took an involuntary step forward, her fingers twitching as if wanting to reach for the pendant herself. “Thank you,” I said finally, my voice cool despite the storm of emotions beneath my facade. I didn’t extend my hand toward the pendant, though. “Do I need to offer something in return?” I asked, tilting my head, my calm gaze meeting his masked one. His silver eyes narrowed, faintly amused, curious. Without waiting for his response, I reached into the pocket of my hoodie, retrieving a small vial. Inside it, a single silvery pill shimmered faintly. Soft moonlight seemed to dance along its surface, as if the pill itself had been touched by celestial magic. I extended the vial toward him, holding it between two fingers. The Rivers Pack’s murmuring grew louder, alarm and disbelief spreading like wildfire. Sarah’s expression twisted into one of restrained horror. “You dare offer our future Alpha King some common medicine?” Elder James was quick to intervene, stepping forward in a desperate attempt to salvage the situation. “Cassandra,” he began, his words measured carefully, “perhaps we should reconsider…” “If it offends, I can take it back,” I said flatly, my indifference sharper than any blade. But Alexander... he didn’t seem offended. His focus was entirely on the vial in my hand, his cursed black thorns shifting faintly beneath their fabric prison. “What is it?” he asked, the timbre of his voice slow, deliberate. His silver eyes lingered on the pill, drawn to its faint glow. I met his gaze, my expression unreadable. “Something that can save a cursed wolf… if they deserve saving.” My words lingered in the air between us, heavier than stone. For a moment, the world seemed to fade away, the tension buzzing in the room narrowing to just the two of us. His mask tilted slightly, and though I couldn’t see his full reaction, there was a subtle shift in his stance. The faint, aching rhythm of the mate bond trembled somewhere deep in my chest, but I shoved it back with brutal force. There was too much at stake to be drawn into that pull.
