I thought about this as a youngster, but never considered it a story. Decades later I talked to an old man who’d had just such a friend as a lad, so I decided to write it for a website. Normally a short story offers the point of view of one or two characters, but I thought I’d try letting a character give that POV to something else. Every time I publish this somewhere, I hear from someone(s) recalling a similar experience. You’re never too old . . .
