The Last Flame

For three days after the wedding, Aveloria celebrated. The castle had been damaged during Kael's attack, but the people did not care. They repaired the broken walls together, replaced the burned flowers, and filled the courtyard with music once again. For the first time in centuries, the kingdom had a queen who had chosen love over tradition. Elara and Vaelor were finally together. But Elara could not forget what had happened during the battle. The darkness that had appeared in Vaelor's eyes. The way the ancient magic had entered his body. And the strange feeling that something was still wrong. One evening, Elara found Vaelor standing alone on the highest tower. The moonlight reflected against his black scales. She approached him. "You've been quiet." Vaelor looked at her. Elara touched his face. "Are you all right?" He lowered his head. She immediately noticed the dark mark beneath his scales. It had spread. "Vaelor..." The dragon pulled away. Elara followed. "Don't hide from me." Vaelor growled softly. "I know you're afraid." He looked at her. "But you don't have to be afraid alone." She placed her hand over the mark. The darkness moved beneath his scales. Elara stepped back. "What is that?" Vaelor lowered his head. She understood. The magic was still inside him. "It didn't disappear." Vaelor shook his head. Elara's heart tightened. "We'll find a way to remove it." But Vaelor looked toward the mountains. He seemed to know something she didn't. That night, the castle bells began ringing. Elara woke suddenly. She ran to the window. Thousands of torches were visible beyond the valley. An army. Her heart sank. "Not again." Captain Rowan entered the room. "Your Majesty." "How many?" "Thousands." "Who leads them?" Rowan hesitated. Then he answered. "Kael." Elara froze. "That's impossible." "He escaped." The castle shook. Vaelor roared from the courtyard. Elara ran outside. The kingdom was surrounded. Kael stood at the front of the army. His face was scarred from the previous battle. "You should have killed me when you had the chance!" he shouted. Elara stepped onto the castle steps. "Why are you doing this?" Kael laughed. "Because you took everything from me." "I took nothing." "You took my dragon." Vaelor stepped forward. Kael pointed at him. "He belongs to me!" Vaelor roared. Elara stood beside him. "No." Kael raised his hand. Dark magic spread across the battlefield. "Then let us see how long your love survives." The army attacked. The battle lasted until dawn. Aveloria's soldiers fought desperately to protect the castle. Vaelor flew above them. His flames lit the sky. But every time he used his fire, the darkness inside him grew stronger. Elara noticed. "Vaelor!" He landed beside her. His eyes were changing again. The golden color was fading. "Stop." Vaelor shook his head. He wanted to protect her. But the magic was consuming him. Kael watched from the battlefield. "Keep fighting!" Vaelor roared. His fire became darker. Elara realized the truth. The magic was feeding on his anger. Every time Vaelor fought Kael, it became stronger. She ran toward him. "Vaelor, stop!" He looked at her. His eyes were almost completely black. "Please." The dragon trembled. "Look at me." He did. "Remember who you are." The darkness continued spreading. "You are not his weapon." Vaelor breathed heavily. "You are not a monster." The golden color returned to his eyes. "You are Vaelor." The dragon lowered his head. "And you chose me." Vaelor closed his eyes. The darkness began disappearing. Kael screamed. "No!" He raised his sword and ran toward them. Elara turned. Kael was coming directly for her. Vaelor saw him. His instincts took over. He attacked. Kael fell. Vaelor stood over him. His claws were inches from the sorcerer's chest. Kael looked up. "Do it." Vaelor growled. "Kill me." The dragon's eyes burned. "Finish it." Elara approached. She knew what Vaelor was thinking. He wanted revenge. After everything Kael had done, he wanted to destroy him. But Elara reached for his wing. "Vaelor." The dragon looked at her. "Don't." Kael laughed weakly. "You still refuse to kill me?" Elara looked at him. "Yes." "Why?" "Because if you die by his claws, you win." Kael frowned. "You don't understand." "I do." She looked at Vaelor. "You spent years telling him he was nothing but a weapon." She turned back to Kael. "If he kills you, then he becomes exactly what you wanted him to be." Kael became silent. Elara continued. "I won't let you take that from him." Vaelor slowly lowered his claws. Kael stared at him. For the first time, the dragon was not obeying anyone. Not Kael. Not even Elara. He was choosing for himself. Vaelor stepped away. The soldiers seized Kael. The sorcerer was finally defeated. The army surrendered. The battle was over. But Vaelor collapsed. Elara ran toward him. "Vaelor!" The darkness had spread across his entire body. She held his head. "Please stay with me." Vaelor breathed weakly. Elara began crying. "No." She looked toward the soldiers. "Find a healer!" They ran. But Vaelor's breathing became slower. The magic had gone too deep. Elara held him tighter. "You promised me." Vaelor opened his eyes. She smiled through her tears. "You promised we would fly together." Vaelor gently moved his head toward her. "I know." She laughed softly through her tears. "You can't leave me now." The dragon closed his eyes. Elara pressed her forehead against his. "I love you." For a moment, there was silence. Then something extraordinary happened. The blue stone around Elara's neck began glowing. It was the stone Vaelor had given her. Light spread from it. The darkness covering Vaelor began breaking apart. Elara stared in disbelief. "Vaelor..." The dragon opened his eyes. The darkness disappeared. His scales returned to their original black. His eyes were golden again. He was free. Completely free. Elara laughed and cried at the same time. "You came back." Vaelor gently touched his forehead against hers. The people of Aveloria gathered around them. The kingdom was saved. Not by a powerful army. Not by a great sorcerer. But by a dragon who finally learned that his strength did not come from the magic of his master. It came from his own heart. Years later, children in Aveloria would hear the story of the dragon and the princess. They would hear how a terrible dragon once flew toward a castle with orders to destroy it. They would hear how a brave girl walked toward him instead of running away. They would hear how she asked him not to burn her home. And they would hear how the dragon stopped. But Elara always told them that was not the true beginning of the story. "The story began," she would say, "when Vaelor realized he could choose." She and Vaelor lived together in the castle. Elara became one of Aveloria's greatest queens. Vaelor became its guardian. And every evening, they flew above the Silver Mountains. Sometimes Elara would sit quietly on his back. Sometimes they would race the clouds. Sometimes they would simply watch the sunset. Their love had survived fear. It had survived hatred. It had survived magic. It had survived death. And perhaps that was why their story became a legend. Not because a princess married a dragon. But because a dragon who had spent his entire life being told whom to obey finally learned the greatest lesson of all: Love does not mean owning someone. Love means giving them the freedom to choose. And Vaelor had chosen. He had chosen freedom. He had chosen kindness. He had chosen Elara. As the sun disappeared behind the mountains, Elara rested her head against his scales. "Take me home." Vaelor spread his wings. Below them, the kingdom glowed with thousands of golden lights. Then he flew. And the people of Aveloria looked toward the sky without fear. Because they knew the dragon above them was no longer a weapon. He was not a monster. He was not anyone's possession. He was simply Vaelor. The dragon who chose love.
