Chapter Five: The Bond Breaker

792 Words
The cave walls shook with the force of the howl—low, guttural, laced with rage and desperation. Selene’s breath caught in her throat. Every part of her wolf instinct screamed run, but she stood her ground. Lucien drew closer, his eyes darting toward the cave’s entrance. “We don’t have much time. He’s breaching the mountain wards.” Selene stared down at the burning symbol on her wrist. The rune pulsed in rhythm with her heartbeat—faster, harder. The bond between her and Kael was reacting to his proximity, flaring alive like a flame gasping for oxygen. “He knows,” she whispered. “He can feel me slipping from him.” Lucien reached out. “If you want to sever the bond, it has to be now. Before he gets here.” A pulse of heat surged through her wrist. A memory. A whisper. > “You’re mine, Selene. Nothing will ever change that.” Kael’s voice—possessive, velvet, cruel. Selene flinched. “What do I do?” Lucien led her to the center of the glowing cave. A shallow pool shimmered, moonlight rippling across its surface. “This is the Pool of Severance. You must face him—not just in memory, but within your soul. The bond is alive in both of you. If you hesitate, even for a second, it will consume you.” Selene stepped into the pool. The water chilled her to the bone. The rune on her wrist seared brighter, glowing like molten silver. Lucien stood at the edge, his jaw clenched. “Once it starts, I can’t help you.” “I don’t want help,” she said. “I want freedom.” She submerged her hand into the pool. The world around her fractured. --- Suddenly, she stood in a moonlit meadow. Familiar. Too familiar. The stars above gleamed cold and indifferent. The night she had given herself to Kael. He was there—barefoot, shirtless, golden-eyed and beautiful in a way that hurt. “Selene,” he breathed. She staggered back. “You’re not real.” “This is real to us,” he said, voice low, seductive. “You’re in the bond space. And in here, you still belong to me.” He stepped forward. “You remember this place. The first time I claimed you. The first time you said you loved me.” “Lies,” she hissed. “All of it. You killed my mother. You sold me out.” His smile faltered. “I did what I had to do.” “You broke me.” Kael’s golden eyes flickered with something—regret? Pain? “I never wanted to hurt you.” Selene’s body ached. Her chest tightened. The bond tugged at her like a hook in her soul. “Don’t you feel it?” Kael whispered. “We were made for each other. The Moon chose us.” “No,” she said through gritted teeth. “The Moon gave me a choice. And I choose myself.” The wind howled. The moon above blazed silver. And then Selene’s mark exploded in light. She screamed—not from pain, but from release. The bond ripped like torn flesh, unraveling between them. Kael dropped to his knees, clutching his chest. “No!” he cried. “Don’t do this—please—Selene—” She stood tall, glowing with unchained power. “I’m not yours,” she said. “Not anymore.” And the vision shattered. --- Back in the cave, Selene collapsed to her knees, panting. Lucien rushed to her side. “You did it.” The mark on her wrist was gone. In its place, a faint crescent scar remained—like a brand burned by choice. Selene looked up. Her eyes, once hazel, now shimmered silver. “I feel… free,” she whispered. “Then you’re ready,” Lucien said softly. “To become what you were born to be.” Before she could ask, the mountain shook again. The cave walls cracked. And a voice boomed through the air—raw and furious. > “SELENE!” Kael. He was here. Selene stood, shoulders squared. “Let him come.” Lucien looked at her with something new in his eyes—respect. But then— A new scent filled the air. Not Kael. Feminine. Powerful. Ancient. Lucien stiffened. “No... it can’t be.” Selene’s heart pounded. “What?” A figure stepped through the crumbling entrance. Cloaked in shadows. Eyes like burning coal. And then the figure smiled. > “Hello, daughter. Did you miss me?” > Selene’s breath stopped. Her mother had died years ago. But the woman standing before her… was very much alive.
