Selene froze.
Her heart thundered in her chest, her legs rooted to the cave floor. The woman who stepped through the shattered entrance was cloaked in a midnight-black robe, her hair cascading in dark waves that shimmered under the moonlight filtering into the cave. Her face... familiar. Too familiar.
But impossible.
“Mother?” The word cracked out of her like dry lightning.
The woman tilted her head, smile sharp. “Not quite the reunion you were expecting?”
Lucien’s sword was in his hand before Selene blinked. “Back away from her.”
The woman chuckled. “Oh Lucien... still so dramatic. You don’t even recognize the very magic that birthed you.”
Selene’s throat tightened. “My mother died. Kael told me you were ambushed by rogues—”
“Kael told you many things,” she said coolly, stepping into the light. Her eyes gleamed silver and violet—a rare sign of a Moon-Touched bloodline. “But truth was never one of them.”
Selene’s mind reeled. “If you're not my mother, then who are you?”
A long silence followed.
Then the woman’s smile faded. “I am Elaria—the Moon’s chosen. And yes, I was once the woman who bore you. But I died that day, Selene. The moment I realized what the Council planned for you. I had to disappear… or they would’ve used you the way they used me.”
Selene’s knees buckled, but she stood firm. “Used me for what?”
Lucien stepped in, voice low and tight. “Elaria was the last High Priestess of the Lunar Order. Until she was betrayed by the same wolves who now rule the Shadow Court.”
Selene’s head spun. She remembered fragments—rituals, candles, her mother’s soft humming under a blood moon. Things she’d thought were dreams.
“You mean to tell me…” Her voice trembled. “Kael knew?”
Elaria’s smile twisted bitter. “He wasn’t just aware. He was chosen to bind you before your powers awakened. A cursed mating. That’s why the bond was so strong. That’s why breaking it nearly killed you.”
Selene’s breath caught.
“Then what am I?”
Elaria walked to her and gently touched her cheek. “You’re not just a wolf, Selene. You’re the vessel.”
Lucien’s breath hissed through his teeth. “She doesn’t know.”
Elaria’s gaze darkened. “Of course she doesn’t. They’ve kept her in the dark all her life.”
Selene backed away, shaking her head. “The vessel for what?”
Lucien’s voice was like stone. “The Moon’s Wrath.”
Selene froze.
Elaria continued. “Every thousand years, one born of the Lunar Order and royal blood becomes the vessel. A bridge between realms. A bringer of balance… or destruction. You are that vessel, Selene.”
Selene stared at them, her hands trembling. “No… I’m just a wolf. A rejected mate. A girl who wants revenge. That’s all I’ve ever been.”
“No,” Elaria said, stepping closer. “You are destiny in motion.”
Selene opened her mouth—but the air shifted.
Pain struck her chest like a spear.
She dropped to her knees with a cry.
Lucien rushed forward, but Elaria raised her hand. “Don’t touch her! It’s beginning.”
“What’s happening?” Selene gasped, clutching her chest.
Elaria knelt. “The Moon senses your awakening. The wrath has begun to stir inside you. And now—”
The ground shook again. Harder. Deeper.
Lucien cursed. “We’re out of time.”
> A second presence entered the cave.
Selene’s vision blurred—but she felt it. The energy. Dark. Familiar.
Kael.
Lucien raised his sword. “Get her out of here, now!”
But Elaria didn’t move. She looked past them, into the shadows of the cave.
“Too late,” she whispered.
A deep voice echoed across the stone. Velvet and venom.
> “You severed the bond, Selene. But you didn’t sever me.”
Kael stepped from the darkness, golden eyes burning with madness.
Selene forced herself to stand, her voice shaking with fury. “You lied to me. Used me.”
Kael’s smile was a blade. “And you still belong to me.”
He raised his hand—
A wave of black fire shot toward her.
Selene lifted hers on instinct.
Light and dark collided midair—
The force exploded, sending all of them flying.
The cave walls cracked.
The mountain roared.
And from the shadows behind Kael… another figure emerged.
Clad in ceremonial armor.
Holding a black crown.
Lucien’s face turned white. “No. It can’t be.”
Selene gasped, voice barely audible.
> “That’s the Shadow King.”
> Selene’s powers have awakened... but so has the true enemy. The Shadow King has returned.
And he has come for his vessel.
