Chapter Seven: The Vessel’s Awakening

831 Words
The cave smoldered. Dust clouded the air. The ground still hissed where magic had collided. Selene pushed herself upright, her limbs shaking. Energy pulsed under her skin—wild, electric, foreign. She couldn’t feel her wolf. Couldn’t feel anything but the light… and the dark. Both roaring inside her like a storm. Lucien groaned nearby, bleeding from his shoulder. Elaria was already on her feet, eyes glowing as she scanned the cave. “He’s gone.” Selene staggered forward. “Kael?” “No,” Elaria said grimly. “The one who was behind him. The Shadow King.” The name echoed through Selene’s bones. It felt carved into her. Lucien winced, struggling to stand. “He’s not supposed to be real. Just a story. A warning from the old gods.” Elaria’s voice was quiet and cold. “He was sealed away. But now… he has found a way back. Through Kael.” Selene clutched her chest, breathing hard. The pain hadn’t stopped. Her veins felt scorched from within. “What did he do to me?” she asked. Elaria’s expression shifted—part grief, part fear. “He didn’t do this. You did. The Wrath responded to your fear. You summoned it instinctively. But without training, without the Rite, the power will eat you alive.” Lucien stepped closer. “She doesn’t have time for slow training. If the King is back—” Elaria cut him off. “Then she must survive the Binding Trial.” Selene blinked. “The what?” “The only ritual that can stabilize your power. Without it, the Wrath will consume you. Your body isn’t ready to hold both the light of the Moon and the King’s shadow.” Lucien frowned. “Then why hasn’t it already killed her?” Elaria hesitated, then looked at Selene. “Because something else is anchoring her. A soul tie.” Selene's breath caught. “Kael?” “No.” Elaria turned slowly toward Lucien. The cave went still. Lucien stiffened. “That’s not possible.” “You’ve bonded with her, Lucien. The moment you bled for her. The moment you took her pain into yourself.” Elaria’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears. “You were chosen too, whether you wanted to be or not.” Selene stared at him. “You knew?” Lucien looked torn. “I suspected… but I didn’t want it to be true. I was never supposed to—” The ground trembled again. This time, softer. Like footsteps. Selene snapped her head toward the entrance. A figure stood at the edge of the cave. Hooded. Silent. Lucien growled and raised his sword again. “Who’s there?” The figure stepped into view. It was a girl. No older than Selene. Skin pale as moonlight. Eyes completely white, glowing softly. Her feet were bare, and around her neck hung a pendant—twisting silver, shaped like a crescent moon pierced by a dagger. Elaria inhaled sharply. “An Oracle…” The girl opened her mouth. Her voice echoed like a whisper through time. > “The Trial begins at the eclipse.” Selene felt her heart drop. “What trial?” The Oracle looked straight at her. “You will either bind the Wrath… or it will bind you. The Moon has turned her face. You are no longer her child.” Then she pointed at Lucien. > “And you—heir of flame—must decide: will you save the vessel… or destroy her?” Lucien’s eyes widened. “What are you talking about?” But the Oracle didn’t answer. She dropped the pendant onto the stone floor— —and vanished in a burst of white smoke. Selene stared at the place where the girl had been, her pulse racing. “What the hell does that mean?” Elaria looked pale. “It means you’re no longer protected by the old rites. The prophecy has fractured. And now… everything is off course.” Selene clenched her fists. “Then we put it back on course.” But Elaria shook her head. “To do that, you must return to the place of your birth.” Lucien tensed. “You can’t mean—” “Yes,” Elaria said, her voice grim. “She must return to the Shadow Court. To the castle where her father died.” Selene froze. “My father?” Elaria met her gaze. “He was the first Vessel. And the King’s brother.” The world shifted under Selene’s feet. Lucien whispered, “You’re royal… on both sides.” Selene felt it then—the truth, ancient and shattering. Her birth wasn’t just rare. It was forbidden. Her bloodline was war. And the Wrath inside her? It was only the beginning. > Selene learns her lineage ties her to both light and shadow—and that she must face the place where it all began: the court that wants her dead… and possibly, reborn.
