Chapter 35: An Oath Taken

Astor The days had begun to blur together as we ran, our oath dragging our exhausted body forward long after our screaming muscles had begged for us to stop. Cyrene’s breath came in pants, her lips crusted with dried spittle as her tongue flopped uselessly from between her jaws. But still, she ran. It was all she could do to put one paw in front of the other, to keep her legs under us. I did my best to distract her from her exhaustion, lending my strength and support when I could, telling her stories and silly jokes when there was nothing else I had to give. As the hours stretched on and we had still not encountered the Hunter, I had to settle for quiet encouragement, doing my best to shoulder the burden of this journey with her. ‘Just a few more minutes….just over that hill there….h
