49 I crossed the dirt front yard slowly. The dust the truck had kicked up reflected white in the headlights, like a cloud of fog gradually going to ground. It was quiet, with the crickets and cicadas and frogs and any other noisy buggers tucked in, waiting for warmer nights. Something that might have been a dog barked far away, so far away it may as well have been another world. Turning sideways to walk around Ralph’s car (a little closer to the house than it had been before I arrived), I tilted my head so my cap blocked the direct glare from the truck.
