Part I: Elena
The damp chill of the lower dungeons bit through the thin fabric of Elena’s dress, but it was nothing compared to the freezing isolation eating away at her chest. Hours had blurred together in the absolute, suffocating darkness of the cell. The heavy iron shackles around her wrists felt like bands of ice, branding her as a traitor in a game she never wanted to play.
She leaned her head back against the slimy stone wall, closing her eyes as the memory of Nathaniel's face replayed like a slow-motion nightmare. It wasn't the physical pain of his grip that haunted her; it was the look in his amber eyes when he found her with Julian. The total absence of warmth. The crushing conviction that she had willingly betrayed him.
“Let the cold stone teach her what happens when she betrays the crown.”
His words echoed hollowly in the damp corridor. He truly believed she was just another piece in Julian’s chess game, a deceitful human pawn sent to fracture his rule.
Footsteps. Heavy, unhurried, and rhythmic.
Elena didn't bother to look up as the guard stationed at the end of the hall shifted. But the footsteps didn't stop at the outer post; they drew closer, pausing right outside her iron-barred door. The faint, flickering torchlight cut across a tall, imposing silhouette.
Julian.
He didn't wear a crown, yet he carried himself with the effortless ease of a man who believed the throne was already his. He leaned casually against the iron bars, a soft, almost sympathetic smile curving his lips.
"They treat you poorly, little bird," Julian murmured, his voice smooth enough to cut glass. "My brother always lacks finesse when his pride is wounded. He hides his terror behind cruelty."
Elena opened her eyes, glaring through the darkness with a flash of pure venom. "Get out of here, Julian. You got what you wanted. Nathaniel hates me, the alliance is broken, and your path to the throne is clear. Why are you here? To gloat?"
Julian's smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a dark, intense flicker of genuine fixation. He reached through the bars, his gloved fingers brushing uncomfortably close to her cheek before she jerked away.
"I didn't do it just for the crown, Elena," Julian whispered, his tone dropping into something dangerously low and possessive. "Nathaniel thinks he owns everything he touches, but he never knew how to value what was right in front of him. But don't worry...
your punishment won't last much longer. Soon, a public lesson will be made, and everyone will see the cost of treason."
Before Elena could snap back a reply, Julian turned smoothly on his heel and disappeared into the shadows, leaving her alone with a cold, creeping dread.
Part II: Nathaniel
High above the dungeons, inside the obsidian war room, the air was thick with the metallic scent of spilled wine and smoldering ash. Nathaniel stood before the massive arched window, staring out into the starless night. His claws had carved deep, jagged gouges into the solid stone window sill where his hands rested.
The beast beneath his skin thrashed, roaring for blood, howling for the scent of the human who had wormed her way past every defense he had ever built.
Traitor.
The word felt like acid on his tongue. For months, he had fought against his own instincts, convincing himself that keeping Elena close was purely a tactical move to control her unique bloodline. He had lied to his council, defied his generals, and broken every ancient law of the hybrid court just to protect her from the shadows.
And how had she repaid him? Standing in the dark archives, wrapped in the quiet intimacy of his brother's shadow, holding the sacred ledger of the throne.
A sharp knock at the heavy oak doors broke the silence.
"Enter," Nathaniel commanded, his voice vibrating with suppressed demonic fury.
General Vane stepped into the room, bowing low before keeping a cautious distance. "My King. The northern border scouts report that Julian's faction is moving quietly through the lower passes. But... that is not all."
Nathaniel didn't turn around. "Spit it out."
"We intercepted a courier bird flying from the dungeons toward Julian's private quarters," Vane said carefully, holding up a small, folded scrap of parchment bearing a smudge of familiar ink.
"It contains a fragment of the archive seal translation—written in a human hand."
The room seemed to plunge ten degrees colder. The shadows around Nathaniel flickered and stretched, twisting into terrifying shapes as his supernatural aura violently surged, shattering the remaining crystal decanters on the nearby table.
She wasn't just caught by accident. She was actively passing information to the man who wanted him dead..
Nathaniel slowly turned around, his amber eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute clarity born of pure heartbreak and lethal wrath. The hesitation that had held him back for months vanished, replaced by the cold, ruthless instinct of an apex predator.
"Prepare the execution block in the central courtyard for tomorrow morning," Nathaniel ordered, his voice terrifyingly calm. "If she wants to play the traitor's game, she will learn how a king cleanses his house."
A king consumed by venom, blind to lies,
A shattered heart beneath the stormy skies.
