Chapter 5: The Imposter’s Shadow

636 Words
The heavy iron gates of the central courtyard creaked open, echoing across the frost-covered cobblestones. A freezing wind swept through the execution grounds, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and impending death. In the center stood the obsidian block, dark and stained with the blood of centuries of traitors. High above the courtyard, hidden within the dark, vaulted chambers of the eastern tower, the real Elena pressed her hands against the cold glass of a barred window. Her breath fogged the pane as she stared down into the courtyard below, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs. Through the blur of the storm, she saw them. Two armored guards marched forward, dragging a figure wrapped in a heavy, mud-stained gray cloak. The captive stumbled, her head bowed low, shoulders trembling violently as if weeping under the crushing weight of terror. Elena’s breath hitched. She squinted against the wind, a cold wave of horror washing over her. The hair, the height, the frail curve of the shoulders—it was an exact mirror image of her. A decoy. A poor human captive Julian had plucked from the outer villages and glamored to look just like her. "Kneel," the lead guard barked, shoving the prisoner down onto the icy stone right before the execution block. From the shadows of the arched colonnade, Julian stepped out. He kept a respectful distance, his face carved into an expression of sorrowful regret, though his eyes gleamed with a quiet, triumphant malice. He had played his final card to perfection, ensuring Nathaniel’s own hands would execute an innocent girl while the real Elena watched helplessly from above. On the high balcony overlooking the yard, Nathaniel materialized like a shadow of death. The supernatural pressure radiating from his body made the torches flicker and die. Without a word, he leaped down to the courtyard, landing with a heavy thud right beside the execution block. He didn't hesitate. With a ruthless motion, he grabbed the hood of the captive’s cloak and jerked it backward. The hood fell away, revealing a mass of dark hair and tear-stained cheeks. Nathaniel’s breath caught in his throat. The amber fire in his eyes flared wildly, then violently faltered as every visual cue confirmed his worst fears. The same delicate facial structure. The same haunting human scent. "Please... mercy, Your Majesty," the decoy sobbed, her voice trembling with a fragile cadence that mirrored Elena's exact pitch, trained by Julian’s dark magic. "I was forced... Julian made me do it!" Hearing those words—hearing the accusation hurled at his brother by the face of the woman he had secretly loved—shattered the last remaining fragments of Nathaniel’s restraint. A low, demonic growl ripped from his chest, shaking the frost from the surrounding stones. He looked past the kneeling girl toward Julian, his gaze turning to absolute, lethal ice. "You see, brother?" Julian spoke softly, stepping forward with a mask of pious heartbreak. "I told you she couldn't be trusted. Even now, facing death, she tries to shift the blame to save her skin. It tears me apart to see a king brought so low by a mere human." Nathaniel’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked furiously. He raised his hand, his dark claws extending, ready to deliver the fatal blow that would sever his final weakness. "If treason is your language, human, I will write my answer in your blood," Nathaniel snarled, his voice dead, hollow, and devoid of all mercy. High in the tower, Elena screamed, pounding her fists against the thick glass, though her voice was completely swallowed by the howling wind. She watched in sheer terror as the executioner's blade caught the pale moonlight, beginning its deadly downward descent. A phantom kneeling in the freezing rain, A cruel deception forged in grief and pain.
