Loretta hadn’t slept well in days. She had made sure of it, throwing herself into the relentless work, refusing rest as a form of punishment. Each morning she beat the sun to the living room, just for a mug of coffee in her trembling hands before rushing back to her room. She knew it was obvious she was ignoring him, but that was all she could do. So she buried herself in reports, emails—anything to keep her brain from drifting back to it. The kiss. It was a mistake.
