The smoke hit her first, sharp and uncomfortable, like she’d walked into a wall of heat. Loretta blinked, trying to shake off the dizziness in her head. Then, she heard an odd, hissing sound from the stove, too soft at first to be alarming. But then the flames flared up, sudden and quick, licking at the bottom of the cabinet above the stove. The curtain, hanging a little too close, caught fire. The fire was growing fast. “Loretta.” Martin’s voice came through the smoke as the fire alarm angrily went off blasting. “Get down. Now.” He screamed rushing into the kitchen. She didn’t move. Not because she didn’t want to. Her brain just... blanked. The flames were taking over. Fast. Crawling up the stove, licking the wall like they were hungry. Her heart dropped. Her stomach flipped. B
