As we approached our home, I couldn't help but notice the soft glow of lights seeping through the curtains. A sense of dread washed over me as I realized that Luca was home. I had hoped, almost prayed, that she wouldn't be there when we returned. My heart sank as I contemplated the inevitable confrontation that awaited us. The tension in the air was suffocating, and a surge of anxiety coursed through me. The less people around the better. I had hoped that maybe we could've resolved it, and he leaves, and it'd be like nothing happened. But it hardly ever goes that way if Alistair is involved.
Luca knew the situation and I hope she would be understanding once she realizes who exactly I brought to our home.
I gently ushered May inside, reminding her to prepare for bedtime. She skipped off, leaving me alone outside in the evening's cool embrace. My heart raced as I knew I had precious little time for this private conversation with Alistair.
Just as I settled in the dimly lit garden, Luca appeared at my side, concern etched on her face. I patted her shoulder, reassuring her that everything was fine and that she should trust me. She reluctantly retreated, leaving me to confront my past. But not before staring down Alistair. I was relieved she left so easily but I had a feeling she would be close by just in case.
Alistair, stood there obediently, a hint of nostalgia in his eyes. My voice trembled as I asked, "Okay Alistair. Care to explain what you're doing here?"
I couldn't help but feel a mixture of fear and anger coursing through my veins. Alistair's presence sent a shiver down my spine. I'd thought I had left that nightmare behind, but there he was, looking at me with a mix of longing and resentment.
He didn't respond immediately, his gaze fixed on the ground for a moment before he finally met my eyes. "I came looking for you, Seraphina."
"Why, Alistair?!" I exclaimed, unable to contain my emotions.
Alistair's expression hardened, and a glint of anger appeared in his eyes. "I loved you, Seraphina. I still do. But you abandoned me. You left me when I needed you the most. I thought you were dead!"
I couldn't believe what I was hearing, he was playing the victim card.
"I left because I had to save myself," I retorted, my voice shaking with emotion. "You were suffocating me, Alistair. I wanted my own freedom. I had to escape, or I would have lost myself entirely. You act like I left you to die!"
"You might as well have!" He exclaimed throwing his arms up. "From the second I woke up we looked for you. I have not stopped, not for one second. And here I find you with-" he didn't finish his sentence. He just crossed his arms and snapped his mouth shut.
"My family?" I questioned earning a scoff from him in return.
"Do you dislike that fact I made my own family in my own life?" I asked defensive.
"As if you can even call it a life." He spoke offended, "I can offer you Luxury and comfort, and yet you want this. And they aren't even your actual family. It's just pretend."
I gasped. Now truly more offended this time. Alistair has hardly ever acted this way. Especially towards me.
"Excuse me?! You don't even know what's going on."
"Yes I do. I know enough to know that you shouldn't be here. If a husband and child is what you want, I can give that you. He-" he pointed at my house, gesturing to what I assume to be Luca. "Isn't even a he. You both try hard to keep this a secret, if you just come-" he tried to reach for my hand. I snatched my own hand away and backed away from him.
"Wait, how do you know all of that? How long have you been around and how did you even find me?"
He gazed at me with those mesmerizing, silver eyes, a mixture of sadness and longing in his expression. "A few weeks," he replied, his tone filled with a mix of sincerity and desperation. "I've been watching from the shadows, trying to protect you and find the best way to approach you."
I couldn't help but scoff at his words. "Protect me? Alistair, I'm fine and I've been fine this entire time. I figured it out on my own and I will continue to do so." I snapped, my anger building.
Alistair sighed, running a hand through his shiny blonde hair. "But you don't have to. Look, I know I made mistakes, Seraphina, and I've had time to reflect on them. I promise you, I've learned to control my urges, and I just want a chance to prove to you that we belong together. "
"You still haven't explained how you found me. You knew details about my life that no one else should know."
He hesitated for a moment before finally revealing his secret. "I have my ways, Seraphina. We spent a long time tracking you down, gathering information from various sources. It wasn't easy, but it was necessary."
I shivered at the thought of him watching me from the shadows, but a part of me couldn't help but feel a strange, twisted sense of flattery that he had gone to such lengths to find me. "Wait, we? Where is Lucius?" I just now realized if one found me the other one has to be close by. It was surprising that I only had one lone brother in front of me right now.
"Once I figured out your location I threw him off and led him in the opposite direction. I wanted to find you first. Maybe if he did his own investigations instead of following my work he would be here." he spoke matter-of-factly. I could only shake my head in disbelief.
He took a step closer, his cold hand gently touching my cheek. "Please, Seraphina, just give me a chance to prove myself. I love you, and I'll do anything to win your heart again."
As I looked into his eyes, I was torn between the past and the uncertain future. The decision of whether to give Alistair another chance weighed heavily on my mind, and I couldn't help but wonder if his promises were sincere or just another trap.
