Chapter 4 - Black

Black   The celebration continued at our dining table. We were talking and eating happily. I noticed that Rufus and Theodore's eyes never met mine again after they saw me walking down the stairs a while ago. Nevertheless, I can see in their eyes that they were also happy. After eating the main course we decided to eat the cake in the living room. Theodore brought the cake to the round table and Mavy and I went to the kitchen to get utensils.   While walking to the living room, I heard Rufus talking to Mrs. Watsinkon.  "You have to wait until this day ends. You can get her tomorrow but not today," I heard Mrs. Watsinkon's voice.   "We know," Rufus' voice was cold.   "We have the plates!" Mavy announced when we arrived.   Adelia awkwardly smiled. "Let me help you," she went near us. I can feel the tension building up. Rufus talking to Mrs. Watsinkon is weird; they never met in person. I also saw Mrs. Watsinkon’s shocked face when Rufus, Theodore, and Adelia entered the boarding house. What are they talking about? Rufus will get who?   "Uhm? Let's eat?" I hesitantly asked.   "Of course, let's eat!" Theodore got up and helped Mrs. Watsinkon slice the cake.  We all settled down and ate the cake. Mavy started talking about my admirers. She’s talkative as always, but that’s one of the things that I love about her. She can cheer me up just by telling random stories to me about her boss, her family and siblings, and her new recommended books.    "You know what, I am really curious about who sent these all to Elara. Of all the men who confessed to her, I don't think anyone would have the gut to do this. It's like there is some note written on Elara's forehead that says 'Not available’, that's why any man can confess to her but not court her," Mavy laughed after her long speech about my admirers. I’ve never really liked any of them because they only give me motive and don’t try to earn my attention. They suddenly confessed then the day after their confession, poof, they disappear.    "Stop it, Mavy. It's embarrassing!" I looked at Adelia apologetically.   "It's okay. We are also curious about your admirers and the one who gave you all of these on your 18th birthday," Adelia uttered.   After hearing it, Mavy told talked about every admirer that I have. She told them they always go to the convenience store where we are working and buys a lot of food. One time when it was her shift, one of my admirers asked Mavy to give the bouquet of chocolates to me. I was not aware that this happened. I don’t accept gifts from my admirers, so I didn’t know that Mavy accepted it for me. She got my attention and I listened to her attentively.   "And can you believe it! When I went to the restroom to pee, the bouquet of chocolates suddenly disappeared! At first, I panicked because I thought there was a thief but when I checked the door it was locked and there were no customers in the store. That was the weirdest encounter that ever happened to me," she said rubbing her hands on her arm.    "What? Why didn't you told me?" I wasn’t prepared for this confession of her.   "I'm sorry but I can't tell you that time. I know you don’t accept anything from your admirers but he was begging me. So, I accepted it on behalf of you. Also, I thought you will think that I was just imagining things because the chocolate disappeared. Or worse you'll think that I'm crazy!" she exclaimed.   "I won't!"   "I'm sorry okay, it was just a terrifying experience and I don't how to tell you what happened."   I nodded at Mavy and looked at Theodore and Rufus to see their reaction. When they saw me looking at them they awkwardly laughed.   "What if there are ghosts in the convenience store, Mavy?" Theodore asked.   "Exactly! I already concluded that but that encounter never happened again. If the ghost loves chocolates, we sell different brands of chocolate but it never happened again. There were no missing products or money on the next days, weeks, and months!" she replied hysterically.   "Past is past, you should just forge—" Adelia stopped talking and the three of them — Rufus and Theodore, stood up abruptly.   "Holy sh*t Rufus!" Theodore looked at Rufus.   "What? What happened?" I asked frantically.   They ignored me. "F*ck! Go to the basement Mrs. Watsinkon! Now! We will protect Elara. Mavy go with Mrs. Watsinkon! Faster!" Rufus ordered.   "Don't tell me Rufu—" Mrs. Watsinkon didn't finish what she was about to say because Rufus interrupted her.   "Go now! F*ck! Hurry up!" Rufus said dangerously.   I was so surprised at how she shouted to Mrs. Watsinkon. I protested when he held my wrist so tightly. How dare he talk to Mrs. Watsinkon with that tone!   "What is happening, Rufus? Why are you so angry? Why do you all look like someone is chasing us?!" I shouted, irritated.   "Let's go Mavy!"   "What? How about Elara, Mrs. Watsinkon?" I heard Mavy asked. She looked at me worriedly.   I saw Mrs. Watsinkon pulled Mavy and went to the kitchen. What is happening?   "Guard the f*cking door, Theodore. Adelia make the gate!" Rufus ordered the two.   "Rufus, you know that it will take ten to fifteen minutes before I completely make a gate to Thrylos!" Adelia replied frustratedly.   "Let me go, Rufus!" I wriggled my hand but he tightened his hold more.   I was so confused about what was happening. So, I punched Rufus' arm when he ignored me again.   "Aww! Sh*t! I will explain everything to you, Elara. Later. After we get out of here safely. Please. Please just cooperate," he pleaded.   I became more anxious when he said that to me. His expression is screaming danger. Everything's happening so fast.   "The gate that the Medelin's use. Make a gate where that place is located, Adelia," his voice sounded desperate.   "Okay, I'll make this fast," Adelia went to the kitchen.   Just after Adelia entered the kitchen, we heard the gate on our boarding house being ruined because of the loud bang of metals outside.   "They're here," Theodore announced.   "Adelia how many more seconds?" Rufus asked.   "One minute!" I heard Adelia’s shout.   "F*ck!" Rufus muttered a curse.   I screamed when someone kicked our door so hard that it went open. The first thing that Theodore did is to punch the person that kicked our door. I was terrified when the person went flying outside our house. "Rufus! I can see three werewolves approaching us! Two hundred meters away!" Theodore roared.   "Adelia!" Rufus shouted.   "Thirty seconds!"   I saw how fast Theodore run outside our house. Where did he go? What werewolf are they talking about? This is not a forest! For Pete’s sake! There are no wolves here. After just how many seconds I saw Theodore flying and went straight to our house wall outside.   "Ahhh!" I shouted when our wall got a hole and I saw Theodore's blood.   "Theodore!" I shouted his name, worried about his condition.   "I got the other one, two more Rufus."   "Fifteen seconds! Please. Please make it on time!" Adelia announced.   I almost fainted when I saw two very big werewolves in our ruined gate. They growled when they saw us. Theodore stood up and was ready to fight again. When the werewolves were ready to jump, a brown-haired werewolf pounded on them from nowhere.   The black-haired werewolf was sent flying by the brown-haired werewolf. But the other black-haired werewolf attacked the brown-haired werewolf.   "Rufus!" Adelia shouted, signaling us to go where she is. The next thing I knew, I was lifted and carried by Rufus. He ran so fast but before we disappeared, I heard the black-haired werewolf growled and saw him ready to pounce on us. However, the smoke that Adelia made was gone immediately and then we're in a different place.   "Where are we?" I asked breathing heavily.   We are on a wide road but it was so dark because the lamp posts are not working. I can't see anything. The light coming from the moon isn't enough.    "There!" Adelia pointed at the other side of the road.   Rufus was ready to run again when someone approached us so fast and punched him hard. He accidentally dropped me on the ground. I heard the cracking of my back. My head hit the ground and the next thing I know my vision became blurry. I saw one blurry person staring down at me. Theodore kicked his gut.   "Elara! Get up, please. Go to the other side of the road and you will see a strange-looking door. Open it and go inside. Don't ever look back. I will protect you no matter what," he struggled to make me stand. I was almost unconscious, I can feel my head throbbing.    "Go!" he shouted when he saw the man standing up again.   I looked at the other side of the road and ran limping. When I was so near to cross the road. A very fast truck was driving to where I am. I was so scared for my life, my other leg gave up on me. Before I close my eyes, I heard Adelia, Rufus, and Theodore shouted my name.   I closed my eyes and listened to the screeching sound of the tire of the truck. Is this the end? Am I finally realizing my fate in this world? Dying at an early age?   I looked at the sky one more time. The glittering stars. The bright moon. The darkness of the night. The cold breeze.   For the last time, before I close my eyes forever, I heard them calling my name, and then the world went black.
