Chapter 4

740 Words
Throughout the night, Victor was meticulous in his attentiveness. He moved with a practiced, confident grace, ensuring she felt cherished at every step. He checked on her constantly, whispering words of praise and reassurances into her ear, making sure the experience felt entirely focused on her comfort and pleasure. To Libby, enveloped in the soft linen and the warmth of his embrace, the night felt like the ultimate seal of their love. Giving him her virginity felt like a natural, beautiful surrender to the man who was rebuilding her world. She fell asleep anchored against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. She had no way of knowing that to Victor, this ultimate gift of intimacy was not just a milestone of affection, but the precise moment her life became entirely tied to his. The morning light filtered through the rain-streaked windows in soft, grey ribbons, casting the bedroom in a quiet luminescence. Victor was already awake, propped up on one elbow, watching her sleep with an expression that was both tender and terrifyingly possessive. When Libby's eyes fluttered open, he was already there, pressing a lingering kiss to her forehead. "Good morning, beautiful," he murmured, his voice low and satisfied. He moved with effortless ease, sliding out of bed to pull on a silk robe, then returning to her side to pull the covers tighter around her shoulders. "I had breakfast prepared downstairs. You need to eat." His movements were perfect—the perfect partner, the perfect lover. But as he leaned down to kiss her again, his eyes held a depth that went beyond affection. They held the look of a man who had finally secured something precious, something that could never be taken back. "I was thinking," he continued, resting his hand against the side of her neck, his thumb caressing the soft pulse point beneath her jaw, "you shouldn't have to worry about that exhausting morning commute anymore. Or that retail shift at the gallery." Libby blinked, still heavy with sleep, the warmth of the duvet wrapping around her. "Victor, my shift starts at ten. And I have two finals left this semester—" "I know, my sweet," he interrupted softly, his voice a smooth, soothing cadence. He leaned in, placing another gentle kiss on her temple. "And you’ve worked so hard. But you don't need to push yourself to the point of exhaustion for a job that barely pays you enough to cover train fare. I’ve already spoken to a contact of mine who runs a prominent arts foundation uptown. When you're finished with school, a real position will be waiting for you. A proper one." Libby shifted, sitting up slightly as the covers pooled around her waist. "You spoke to someone about me? Victor, I didn't ask you to do that." "You don't have to ask," Victor said, his smile full of calm, paternal devotion. He reached over to the nightstand, picking up a silver tray set with a glass of fresh orange juice and a single white orchid, placing it gently across her lap. "That’s what a real partner does. I protect your energy. I clear the path for you so you can focus on what matters." He smoothed a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering on her shoulder, pressing just firmly enough to keep her anchored in place. "I called the gallery manager twenty minutes ago," Victor added, his tone entirely casual, as if mentioning the weather. "I told him you wouldn't be coming in today. Or for the rest of the season. I compensated him for the short notice, of course. You don't need that stress cluttering your life anymore." A sudden, sharp chill ran through Libby’s chest, cutting clean through the lingering warmth of the morning. "You... you quit my job for me?" she whispered, her voice tight. "I saved you from a dead-end distraction," Victor corrected gently, taking her hand and holding it between both of his. His gaze was steady, warm, and utterly unyielding. "Your time is too valuable to be wasted on small things, Libby. Your life is here now. With me. Everything you need, I will provide." Looking into his calm, dark eyes, Libby felt a strange, suffocating sensation wash over her. It was wrapped in luxury, delivered with absolute devotion, but for the first time, she felt the faint, distinct outline of a cage closing around her.
