Ace was mid-sentence, tapping through reports on her datapad, when Alice’s voice slipped through the mind-link. ‘Beta Ace, we have a surprise guest in the lobby. Alpha’s family has just arrived. His mother, father, and brother. I thought you’d want to greet them yourself before the Alpha gets here.’ Ace blinked, her fingers freezing above the tablet. Kai’s family? She’d spoken to Clara dozens of times over video calls, the woman who had gently guided her through pack protocol and Beta duties. But she had never met Kai’s father or his notorious younger brother, Civil. ‘I’ll be right down,’ she replied through the link, standing so quickly that her chair rolled back and bumped the wall. She smoothed her skirt, exhaled, and caught her reflection in the glass window: poised but nervous.
