Episode 2: My decisions

1211 Words
Tyler trudged up the worn path to her family's modest home, the weight of the day's events heavy on her shoulders. The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden glow over the neighborhood, but it did little to lift her spirits. She pushed open the creaky front door, greeted by the familiar scent of her mother's cooking—a comforting aroma that always made her feel safe."Hey, Tyler!" her younger sister Kate called from the living room, her voice bright and cheerful. At ten years old, Kate was a bundle of energy, with a wide smile that could light up a room. She rushed over to Tyler, wrapping her arms around her in a tight hug. "How was your first day?""It was... interesting," Tyler replied, trying to muster a smile. She tousled Kate's hair and glanced around the room, spotting her older brother Ben lounging on the couch with a book in hand. At eighteen, Ben was the quiet, thoughtful type, always lost in his own world of stories and ideas."Welcome home," Ben said with a nod, barely looking up from his book. Tyler gave him a small wave before heading into the kitchen, where her parents were busy preparing dinner. Her mother, a petite woman with kind eyes and a gentle smile, was stirring a pot on the stove. She glanced up as Tyler entered, her face lighting up. "Hi, sweetie. How was school?""It was okay," Tyler answered, leaning against the counter. "Just trying to get used to everything."Her father, a tall, sturdy man with a serious expression, was setting the table. He paused and looked at Tyler with a thoughtful gaze. "Glad you're settling in," he said, his voice deep and steady. "We need to talk after dinner. Family meeting."Tyler's heart sank at his words. Family meetings were usually serious, often involving discussions about money or important decisions. She nodded, not trusting herself to speak, and busied herself with helping her mother. Dinner was a simple affair, but the conversation was lively, filled with laughter and stories from Kate's day at school. Ben chimed in occasionally, offering dry humor that made everyone chuckle. Tyler tried to stay engaged, but her mind kept drifting back to the events of the day and the looming family meeting. As they finished eating, her father cleared his throat, signaling the start of the discussion. The room fell silent, and Tyler felt a knot form in her stomach. Her parents exchanged a glance before her father spoke."Tyler, you're in your final year of high school," he began, his tone measured. "And as you know, we need to start thinking about what comes next. Your mother and I have been talking, and we believe it's important to have a plan for your future."Tyler shifted uncomfortably in her seat, already sensing where this was going. Her father continued, "Given our financial situation, we can't afford to send you to a big university. But we think a vocational school might be a good option. Something practical, like nursing or business administration."Tyler felt a surge of frustration and disappointment welling up inside her. She had always dreamed of going to college, exploring different subjects, and finding her true passion. The idea of settling for a vocational school felt like a crushing compromise."But, Dad, I want to go to college," she protested, her voice trembling slightly. "I want to study literature, maybe even become a writer. I don't want to just settle for a job that I don't love."Her father sighed, rubbing his temples. "I know, Tyler, but we have to be realistic. College is expensive, and we simply don't have the means to support that right now. A vocational school is more affordable, and it will give you a stable career."Her mother chimed in, her voice gentle but firm. "We just want what's best for you, sweetheart. We know it's not what you wanted, but it's a good opportunity. You can always continue your education later, once you're more established."Tyler felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She understood their concerns, but it felt like her dreams were being dismissed, reduced to a practical choice. She glanced at Ben, who was watching quietly, his expression unreadable. Kate looked between them all, her young face filled with confusion."But it's not fair," Tyler whispered, her voice barely audible. "I don't want to give up on my dreams just because we can't afford it."Her father's expression softened, and he reached across the table, placing a hand on hers. "I know, and I'm sorry. It's not easy for any of us. But we have to make the best of what we have. We love you, Tyler, and we want you to have a good life. This isn't the end of your dreams, just a different path."Tyler looked down at her plate, blinking back tears. She knew her parents loved her and wanted the best for her, but it felt like they were asking her to compromise too much. The room was quiet for a moment, the weight of the conversation settling over them.Ben finally spoke, his voice calm and measured. "Tyler, I know it's hard, but maybe this isn't a bad thing. You can still write, still follow your passion. Maybe it'll just take a little longer to get there."Tyler nodded, appreciating his attempt to comfort her, but it did little to ease the sting of disappointment. She excused herself from the table, needing some space to process everything. She retreated to her room, feeling a mix of anger and sadness. As she sat on her bed, staring at the blank pages of her journal, Tyler couldn't help but feel trapped. She wanted to break free, to chase her dreams without being held back by financial constraints. But reality was setting in, and it wasn't kind. She picked up her pen and began to write, pouring her frustration and hopes onto the page. It was her way of coping, of making sense of the chaos around her. She wrote about the day's events, the bullying she witnessed, the family meeting, and her conflicted feelings about the future. As the words flowed, she felt a sense of release, a small comfort in expressing her thoughts. She knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but she was determined to find a way to make her dreams come true, even if it meant taking a detour. For now, she would focus on finishing high school and finding her own path. She wouldn't let anyone, not even her family, dictate her future. She would find a way to make it work, to carve out a life she could be proud of.With a deep breath, Tyler closed her journal and lay back on her bed, staring at the ceiling. She felt a little lighter, the weight of the day's events lifting slightly. She knew she had a long way to go, but she was ready to face whatever challenges came her way.As she drifted off to sleep, Tyler made a silent promise to herself: she would fight for her dreams, no matter what. She would prove to herself and everyone else that she could achieve great things, even in the face of adversity. And she wouldn't let anyone, not even the Big Five or her own family, stand in her way.
