Chapter 3: The Night She Called Me

1203 Words
Ethan Pov Morning came quietly, I was already awake before the sun rose. I always was. Sleep was something I didn’t need much of, but I kept the habit because It made me look normal. I stood in the kitchen, preparing breakfast and it was simple food, nothing special, just enough for them. I prepared eggs, bread and tea. The sound of the pan was soft, steady and the smell filled the kitchen slowly. I moved calmly, like I had done this many times before because I had. Three years of the same routine. Cook and Clean and also stay out of the way. I placed the food on the table neatly and stepped back. Right on time, I heard footsteps. Nina walked in first, dressed for work, sharp and perfect as always then her mother followed behind her, and then her uncle. They all sat down, no one greeted me, no one thanked me, they just started eating like I was invisible. I stood there for a moment, then turned back to the kitchen. That was how it always went. “Make sure the house is clean before we get back,” Nina said without looking at me. “I will,” I replied. She didn’t respond. After a few minutes, they stood up and left the table and plates half empty again. I waited until they were gone before I came back out. The house became quiet then I cleaned every plate, every cup and every small mess they left behind. By the time I finished, the house looked perfect again, empty and silent. I walked to my room and sat down. For a moment, I did nothing, then my phone buzzed and I looked at the screen. It was another message. “New issue detected in the company system.” I stared at it for a few seconds then I replied with just one word. “Fixed.” Before the problem could even grow, it was already gone. That was how things worked, not because of luck but because of me. I locked my phone and placed it beside me. Hours passed, the day moved slowly until evening came. It was already dark when my phone rang again. This time, it was Nina. I looked at her name on the screen then for a moment, I didn’t answer. Then I picked it up. “What is it?” I asked calmly. Her voice came through, loud and annoyed. “Where are you?” “At home.” “Good. Come to Silver Crown Club. Now.” I paused. “Why?” “Just come,” she snapped. “Don’t ask questions.” Then she ended the call. I stared at the phone for a second then I stood up. The club was loud, bright lights flashed everywhere, music filled the air, people laughed, danced, and shouted over the noise. I walked inside slowly, my eyes scanning the room. It didn’t take long to find her. Nina was sitting with her friends at a large table. Drinks in front of them and laughter around them. Kelvin was there too, of course. I walked toward them. The closer I got, the more I heard their voices. “…and then he just stood there like an i***t,” one of her friends said, laughing. Nina laughed too. “He doesn’t know his place,” she said. Then she saw me. Her smile faded. “Finally,” she said. “You’re late.” “I came as soon as you called,” I replied. Her friends looked at me with interest. Some with amusement and some with disrespect. “This is your husband?” one of them asked, clearly surprised. Nina rolled her eyes. “Unfortunately.” Laughter followed. I stood there quietly watching and listening. “Why is he dressed like that?” another friend asked. “Because that’s who he is,” Nina replied. “Simple and useless." Kelvin smirked but said nothing. Then I looked at Nina. “You called me here,” I said. “What do you want?” She leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs. “Serve drinks,” she said. I didn’t move. The table went quiet for a second. “I’m not your servant,” I said calmly. Her expression changed instantly. “What did you say?” “I came because you called,” I said. “Not to be treated like that.” Her friends leaned in, watching closely. This was entertainment for them. Then Nina stood up slowly. “You’re embarrassing me again,” she said. “No,” I replied. “You’re doing that yourself.” That was enough, her hand moved fast and she gave me a heavy slap. The sound was loud, louder than the music. People nearby turned to look, my head turned slightly from the impact but just like before— I didn’t react. “You will do as I say,” she said angrily. “Or leave.” I looked at her calm and silent then I spoke. “If I leave, don’t call me again.” She laughed. “Like I need you,” she said. A voice came from behind. “I think he deserves better.” Everyone turned, and it was her friend, the same one, the only one who ever spoke for me. She stood there, looking at Nina with a serious face. “You’re going too far,” she added. Nina frowned. “Stay out of this.” “I won’t,” her friend said. “Not when you’re treating him like this.” The tension grew. Kelvin stood up, trying to calm things down. “Alright, that’s enough,” he said. “Let’s not make a scene.” But it was already a scene. Everyone was watching now, I looked at Nina one last time then I turned and started walking away. “Where do you think you’re going?” she shouted then I stopped but I didn’t turn back. “You told me to leave,” I said. Then I walked out. Outside, the night was quiet again with cool air and no noise with no laughter. I stood there for a moment then I looked up at the sky. “Sixteen days,” I said softly. One day gone.Sixteen left. Behind me, the club doors opened, then footsteps hurried toward me. “Ethan!” I turned slightly and it was her friend breathing fast and worried. “I’m sorry,” she said. “She didn’t mean it like that.” I said nothing. “She’s just… confused,” she added. I looked at her. “She knows exactly what she’s doing,” I said. She went quiet. “I don’t hate her,” I continued. That surprised her. “But I won’t stay where I’m not respected.” She nodded slowly. “That’s fair,” she said. There was a short silence. “Take care of yourself,” she added. “I will,” I replied. She gave a small smile then she went back inside, I stayed where I was alone and calm and also waiting because there are sixteen days left and everything would change.
