Infected inside (chapter 15)

None of us moved at first or even breathed for that matter. It was me who finally went over and kicked the thing to make sure it was dead, it didn’t move and everyone finally took a breath. We were all heading to leave when we saw dr. Silvia outside. She looked scared and had a big case with her as she walked along the corridor, when she looked in she clocked us and the rage on Liams face and ran. We ran after her but she was damn fast as she dodged and slipped around bodies like they weren’t even there. I of course slipped on the blood and fell on my arse. Lab guy helped me up and we carried on. Liam was gaining on her and raised his gun to shoot but she turned and flung herself out of the side door. We ran after her and again Liam raised his gun to fire at her but there was a helicopter waiting and ready and she threw herself into it causing Liam to miss. The helicopter started up and they rose into the sky not affected by any of Liams shots fired at it. “f**k!” He yelled. As we watched her get away it was then that I looked around and realised we weren’t alone. Liam was still raging when I tapped his shoulder. “What!” He yelled. He looked at my face and then turned to see what I was looking at and realised we were surrounded by zombies. Both the helicopter and the gun had alerted them of our presence. We slowly started to back up but Liam stopped us. “Don’t back yourselves into a corner, that’s a guaranteed death sentence.” We all put our backs together and waited. Liam ducked as something pinged just past his head. I was confused at first when he pulled me down beside him behind the rock we were stood by. When he pointed I looked over and saw two soldiers behind their own defence. They had tried to shoot us. Zombies were still making their way towards us but I noticed there were a few also making their way over to the two soldiers in hiding. Liam got into position and took aim at one of the soldiers and waited. When he poked his head up from behind the rock Liam fired a shot that hit the soldiers hat but Liam growled in frustration. “I thought it was a head shot?” I asked. He was sat down behind the rock reloading as he answered, “no, too high up at most I gave him a f*****g hair cut.” I tried not to laugh in the dire situation we were in and stayed behind the rock while Liam got back into position again. Whatever Liam saw had him in complete soldier mode. In a commanding voice he yelled back to us, “get ready and on my count run as fast as you can. Not a second later!” He ducked when rounds were shot at him and then got back up and fired off his own shots. Was he mad I thought. But I saw why he needed us to move. The zombies were a couple of feet away now, others were dead from the firing shots of both Liam and the soldiers, getting hit everytime they moved in front of the cross fire. Stupid zombies but at least it meant fewer of them. The sound of Liams voice brought me back to attention. “One!” He yelled. “Two!” “Three!” Both me and lab guy wasted no time, putting our complete trust in Liam we ran while he ran sideways still firing at the two soldiers as he did so. He didn’t stop firing until we reached a tank. They must have got it out to use against the zombies but been overcome by them before they had a chance to use it. I noticed the dead soldiers lying on the floor. “Stay hidden behind the tank and you should be ok if not run for the other rock to your right.” Liam demanded as he started climbing the tank and jumped in the top, closing the lid behind him. This clearly terrified the two soldiers into action and they jumped out from behind their rock and ran towards the tank, no I realised, not the tank, for me and lab guy. They wanted to use us as shields knowing Liam wouldn’t want to fire at us. I lifted my gun and started firing at them. It threw them completely off guard, they weren’t expecting me to have a weapon or at least know how to shoot one. One of them skidded across the floor to a stop while the other ducked to the side out of the shot. I readjusted my aim and fired again hitting the soldier who had ducked to the side in his arm. He yelled out in pain and I fired again making contact with his chest this time. He didn’t make any more sound. Liam must have trusted me to be ok because he started firing blasts into the zombies. The other soldier looked at his dead friend on the floor and then up at me with wide eyes. I watched the rage grow on his face and then he came charging at me. I still wasn’t as good or fast as Liam so I couldn’t reload in time before he reached me. I tried anyway and was starting to panic when he reached me grabbing me by the shoulders and throwing me to the ground. He punched me in the face hard enough that I felt dizzy but not hard enough that I passed out. He raised his fist again and I knew this time I would most definitely pass out. I closed my eyes and waited for the blow but when none came I peeked out from behind my hands when he made a gurgling noise in his throat. I saw a big machete in his throat and watched as he crumpled to the floor. I looked up and saw lab guy standing there hands still outstretched holding nothing now and panting heavily, sweat from fear dripping down his face. “Thanks.” I said and shakily got to my feet. When I looked out around us there were no zombies left alive. Liam climbed out of the tank and joined us. I looked thoughtful and then said, “we still can’t leave.” “Why not?” Asked Liam. “We still need Danny’s body and the virus.” It took a lot of hiding and stealth and time but we got Danny’s body out and Liam fire carried him outside. We had lab guy trail oil behind us and then used the flame thrower one last time to set the place on fire. We watched it burn and then turned to leave.
