The First Shot

Part 1 The silence inside the ballroom felt suffocating. No one spoke. No one moved. Adrian and Sergei stood only a few feet apart, their eyes locked in a silent battle. Elena could feel the tension vibrating through the room like a live wire. This wasn’t just an argument. This was the beginning of a war. Sergei straightened his jacket slowly. “Well,” he said with a thin smile, “it seems we’ve reached a disagreement.” Adrian’s expression remained calm. “Then you should choose your next move carefully.” Sergei chuckled. “You sound just like your father.” “That wasn’t a compliment,” Adrian replied coldly. Sergei shrugged. “Maybe not.” He turned away as if the conversation was over. But Elena noticed something strange. Sergei’s eyes flicked briefly toward the balcony above the ballroom. Adrian noticed it too. His gaze sharpened instantly. “Elena,” he said quietly. “Yes?” “Stay close.” Before she could ask why— A loud CRACK shattered the room. For a split second, Elena didn’t understand what happened. Then she heard the sound of glass breaking above them. A sniper shot. Someone screamed. Adrian reacted instantly. He grabbed Elena’s arm and pulled her down to the floor just as another bullet slammed into the marble wall behind them. Chaos exploded across the ballroom. People ran in every direction. Tables overturned. Glasses shattered. More screams echoed through the room. “Stay down,” Adrian ordered. Elena’s heart pounded as she looked up toward the balcony. She could see a shadow moving above. Another shot fired. This one hit one of the chandeliers, sending shards of crystal raining down. “Oh my God,” Elena whispered. “They’re trying to kill you.” Adrian’s eyes were cold again. “Yes.” But something about the situation felt wrong. Too public. Too reckless. Whoever ordered this attack didn’t just want Adrian dead. They wanted a message sent. Across the room, Adrian spotted Sergei pushing through the panicked crowd toward the exit. Running. Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Elena, stay here.” “What? No!” But Adrian was already moving. Part 2 Adrian moved through the chaos with deadly focus. His eyes stayed locked on Sergei. The man was almost at the exit now. Adrian grabbed a fallen chair and threw it aside as he pushed through the crowd. “Elena!” someone shouted behind him. But he didn’t stop. Sergei reached the door and pushed it open. Adrian followed seconds later. The hallway outside the ballroom was quieter—but not for long. Sergei ran down the corridor toward the emergency exit. Adrian chased him. “Stop!” Adrian shouted. Sergei glanced back briefly. Then ran faster. The emergency door slammed open as Sergei burst outside onto the hotel’s side street. Adrian followed him out. Cold night air hit his face. Sergei was already heading toward a waiting car. Adrian sprinted forward. “Going somewhere?” he called. Sergei stopped suddenly. For a moment, Adrian thought he had caught him. Then Sergei slowly turned around. And smiled. “You really thought I’d run?” Adrian frowned slightly. That’s when he noticed something. Sergei wasn’t alone. Two armed men stepped out from behind the car. Guns raised. Adrian stopped walking. “You planned this,” he said calmly. Sergei nodded. “Of course.” His smile widened. “The Orlov Syndicate sends their regards.” The two gunmen aimed directly at Adrian. “Goodbye, heir.” Before they could fire— A loud engine roared from the street behind them. A black SUV screeched to a stop. The doors flew open. Adrian’s guards. “Drop your weapons!” one of them shouted. The gunmen hesitated. That hesitation was enough. Gunfire erupted. Sergei cursed and dove into the waiting car as his men fired back. The car sped away down the street before Adrian’s guards could stop it. The gunfire stopped. Silence returned. Adrian stood still, watching the disappearing taillights. One of his guards approached him. “Sir, are you hurt?” “No.” Adrian’s voice was calm. But his eyes were burning with anger. Behind him, the hotel doors burst open. “Elena!” She ran toward him, breathless. “Are you okay?” Adrian nodded. “Yes.” She looked down the street where the car had disappeared. “That was Sergei.” “Yes.” “And he just tried to have you assassinated.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Yes.” Elena crossed her arms. “So… what happens now?” Adrian looked back at the hotel. At the shattered ballroom windows above. Then back at the empty street. His voice turned cold. “Now,” he said quietly, “The war begins.”
