A Seat Among Wolves

Part 1 Elena stood in front of the massive mirror in Adrian’s penthouse, adjusting the black dress one of the house staff had brought her. It was elegant. Too elegant. “You expect me to go to a mafia meeting dressed like this?” she asked. Adrian leaned casually against the doorway, watching her. “It’s not a mafia meeting.” Elena raised an eyebrow. “What do you call a gathering of powerful crime families?” “A business meeting.” She scoffed. “Right.” Adrian stepped into the room and straightened the sleeve of his black suit. “Tonight is important,” he said. “For what?” “To find out who is working with the Orlov Syndicate.” Elena turned to face him. “You think someone in your circle betrayed you?” “I know they did.” His voice was calm, but there was steel behind it. Elena crossed her arms. “And you’re bringing me with you?” Adrian studied her. “Yes.” “Why?” “Because the moment those men saw your face at the warehouse, you became part of this situation.” “That still doesn’t explain why I need to attend your mysterious ‘business meeting.’” Adrian walked closer. His expression was serious now. “Because if the Orlov Syndicate took your brother…” He paused. “They might bring him up tonight.” Elena’s heart jumped. “You think someone there knows where he is?” “It’s possible.” That was all she needed to hear. “When do we leave?” Adrian gave a faint smile. “Now.” Thirty minutes later, a black car pulled up in front of one of the most luxurious hotels in the city. The building glowed with golden lights, and expensive cars lined the entrance. To anyone watching, it looked like a gathering of wealthy business leaders. But Elena knew better now. As Adrian stepped out of the car, the security guards at the entrance immediately moved aside. “Elena,” Adrian said quietly. “Yes?” “Stay close to me.” “I wasn’t planning to wander off.” They entered the grand ballroom together. The room was filled with powerful men and women dressed in expensive suits and gowns. But the atmosphere felt tense. Dangerous. Conversations quieted slightly as Adrian walked in. People noticed him. Some nodded respectfully. Others looked… nervous. Elena leaned closer to him. “They’re scared of you.” Adrian didn’t look at her. “They should be.” Elena scanned the room. “So which one of these people might be working with your enemies?” Adrian’s gaze moved slowly across the crowd. “Any of them.” Part 2 The ballroom buzzed with quiet conversations as Adrian and Elena moved through the crowd. Everywhere they walked, people stepped aside. Whispers followed them. “Elena,” Adrian murmured. “Hmm?” “Act natural.” She glanced at him. “I am natural.” “You look like you’re analyzing a crime scene.” “I am.” Adrian sighed softly. Before she could reply, a man approached them. He was older, with silver hair and a confident smile. “Adrian Volkov.” The man extended his hand. “It’s been a long time.” Adrian shook his hand calmly. “Sergei.” Elena noticed the tension immediately. Sergei turned his attention to her. “And who is this?” “Elena Carter,” Adrian said. Sergei’s eyebrows lifted slightly. “A journalist?” Elena forced a polite smile. “Word travels fast.” “In our world, it always does.” His gaze lingered on her for a moment before returning to Adrian. “You’re bringing outsiders into family meetings now?” Adrian’s expression didn’t change. “She’s with me.” Sergei studied Adrian for a second longer. Then he smiled again. “Interesting.” He leaned slightly closer. “You should be careful tonight.” Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Why?” Sergei’s smile faded slightly. “Because the wolves are hungry.” Then he walked away. Elena exhaled slowly. “That man is creepy.” Adrian watched Sergei disappear into the crowd. “Yes.” “You don’t trust him.” “No.” Elena looked around the room again. “So this whole place is full of powerful criminals who might be working with your enemies.” “Correct.” “And we’re just… standing here.” “For now.” Before Elena could ask another question, the lights in the ballroom dimmed slightly. A man stepped onto the stage at the front of the room. The conversations slowly died down. “Ladies and gentlemen,” the man announced. “Thank you all for attending tonight’s gathering.” Adrian’s attention sharpened. Elena noticed. “What’s happening?” she whispered. “This is where the real meeting begins.” The man on stage continued speaking. “As you all know, the balance of power in this city is changing.” Murmurs spread across the room. “Old alliances are breaking,” the man said. “And new ones are forming.” Elena felt the tension rise around them. Then the man said something that made the entire room go silent. “The Orlov Syndicate has made an offer.” Adrian’s eyes turned ice cold. “Elena,” he whispered. “Yes?” “This just became very dangerous.” And across the ballroom… Several pairs of eyes slowly turned toward Adrian Volkov.
