The Devil’s Invitation

Part 1 The rain had stopped by the time Elena Carter arrived at Volkov Tower. The building stretched high into the night sky, its glass surface glowing with cold white lights. It looked less like a corporate headquarters and more like a fortress. Elena stood across the street for a moment, staring up at it. This was where the most powerful man in the city now ruled. Adrian Volkov. Her fingers tightened around the strap of her bag. Every instinct told her to turn around and go home. But the image of her brother’s smiling face flashed through her mind. Two years. Two years without answers. If Adrian Volkov knew something… she was going to find out. Elena took a deep breath and walked toward the entrance. The moment she stepped inside, she felt it. Power. The lobby was enormous, filled with polished marble floors, black pillars, and silent security guards dressed in suits. Everything about the place screamed money and control. The receptionist looked up. “Name?” “Elena Carter.” The woman’s expression changed instantly. Almost like she had been expecting her. “Mr. Volkov is waiting for you.” Of course he was. Elena tried not to show how uncomfortable that made her feel. A tall guard appeared beside her. “This way.” They walked toward a private elevator at the end of the lobby. The guard pressed a key card against the panel. The elevator doors slid open silently. Inside, there were no buttons. Only one destination. The top floor. The ride felt longer than it actually was. Elena watched the numbers climb on the screen. 20… 35… 52… By the time the doors opened, her heart was pounding. The guard stepped aside. “You can go in.” Elena looked ahead. At the end of a long hallway was a set of black double doors. Behind those doors was Adrian Volkov. The man she believed might be responsible for her brother’s disappearance. She walked forward slowly. Each step felt heavier than the last. When she finally reached the doors, they opened automatically. And Elena Carter walked straight into the lion’s den. Part 2 Adrian Volkov stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, watching the city lights stretch endlessly below. From this height, the world looked small. Controllable. Exactly the way he liked it. Behind him, the doors opened quietly. He didn’t turn around. “She’s here,” one of his guards said. “Send her in.” A moment later, the sound of heels echoed softly across the room. Adrian waited until she stopped walking. Then he turned. And for the first time… He saw Elena Carter. She wasn’t what he expected. Most reporters who chased dangerous stories looked nervous, desperate, or arrogant. But Elena stood straight, her chin slightly lifted, her dark eyes sharp with intelligence and defiance. She wasn’t afraid. Or at least… She was very good at hiding it. Interesting. Adrian studied her silently for a moment. Elena crossed her arms. “You wanted to see me, Mr. Volkov.” Her voice was calm. Direct. Adrian walked toward his desk slowly. “I did.” He sat down and gestured toward the chair in front of him. “Sit.” She didn’t move. “I prefer standing.” A faint smile touched Adrian’s lips. Most people in this city would have rushed to obey him. Not her. Even more interesting. Adrian leaned back in his chair, his sharp gray eyes never leaving her face. “You’ve been investigating my company,” he said. “That’s what journalists do.” “You’ve also been asking questions about my private warehouses.” Elena’s jaw tightened slightly. Adrian noticed. “Which is dangerous,” he continued calmly. “Is that a threat?” she asked. Adrian’s smile disappeared. “It’s a fact.” The room suddenly felt colder. Elena stepped closer to the desk. “My brother disappeared two years ago,” she said. “The last place he was seen was in one of your warehouses.” For the first time, something flickered in Adrian’s eyes. Recognition. Just for a second. Then it was gone. “And you think I had something to do with that?” he asked. “I think powerful men hide ugly secrets.” Silence stretched between them. Then Adrian stood. Slowly. He walked around the desk until he was standing only a few feet away from her. Up close, he was even more intimidating. Tall. Broad. Dangerous. But Elena refused to step back. Adrian looked down at her. “You’re brave, Miss Carter.” “Or desperate.” “Both,” he said quietly. Then he leaned slightly closer. “So let me give you a piece of advice.” His voice dropped lower. “Stop investigating me.” Elena’s eyes flashed. “Or what?” Adrian held her gaze for a long moment. Then he said something she never expected. “Or you’ll end up discovering things you can’t survive.” A chill ran down her spine. But Elena Carter had never been the type to walk away from the truth. And Adrian Volkov had just made her even more determined. Because now she knew one thing for certain. He was hiding something. And whatever it was… It was big enough to scare even The Ruthless Heir.
