The Escape

Part 1 Gunfire echoed through the warehouse as Adrian and Elena ran. The back exit door was only a few meters away, but the armed men were closing in fast. Another bullet slammed into the concrete floor near Elena’s feet. She gasped. “Move!” Adrian ordered. He pushed the metal door open and pulled her outside into the cold night air. The sudden silence outside felt unreal compared to the chaos inside. But it didn’t last. “After them!” someone shouted from inside the warehouse. Adrian grabbed Elena’s hand and ran toward a black car parked behind the building. His car. He unlocked it with a quick press of a button. “Get in.” Elena didn’t hesitate. She jumped into the passenger seat as Adrian slid behind the wheel. The engine roared to life. Headlights flashed behind them as two men burst out of the warehouse doors. One of them raised his gun. A bullet cracked against the back of the car just as Adrian slammed the accelerator. The tires screeched against the pavement as the car shot forward into the empty street. Elena grabbed the dashboard as the car sped through the dark industrial roads. “Are they following us?” she asked breathlessly. Adrian glanced at the rearview mirror. For a moment, the road behind them was empty. Then headlights appeared. Two black SUVs turned onto the street behind them. “Yes,” Adrian said calmly. Elena stared at him. “You sound way too relaxed for someone being chased.” “I’ve had worse nights.” The SUVs began gaining speed. Elena’s pulse jumped. “Adrian…” “I see them.” He turned sharply onto another road, the car drifting slightly before regaining control. The city lights appeared in the distance now. If they could reach the main streets, it would be harder for their pursuers to attack. But the SUVs were closing in fast. One of them swerved beside Adrian’s car. The passenger leaned out the window with a gun. “Duck!” Adrian shouted. Elena dropped down just as another shot shattered the passenger-side window. Glass exploded across the seat. Adrian cursed under his breath. The SUV tried to ram their car from the side. But Adrian reacted instantly, swerving away and accelerating again. Elena slowly lifted her head. “Please tell me you have a plan.” Adrian’s eyes stayed on the road. “I do.” “And?” “We survive.” Elena groaned. “That’s not a plan!” Adrian turned sharply onto a crowded street filled with late-night traffic. Cars honked as he sped through them. The SUVs tried to follow—but the heavy traffic slowed them down. Adrian used the moment to make another quick turn down a narrow side street. When he finally looked in the mirror again… The SUVs were gone. For now. Elena leaned back against the seat, breathing hard. “That was insane.” Adrian finally allowed himself a small breath of relief. “Yes.” But his expression remained serious. Because tonight had confirmed something dangerous. Someone powerful wanted him dead. And they were willing to start a war to make it happen. Part 2 Fifteen minutes later, the car stopped in front of Volkov Tower. Elena stared up at the towering building again. “I thought you said I should stay away from you.” Adrian stepped out of the car. “I did.” “Then why bring me here?” Adrian walked around to her side and opened the door. “Because whoever attacked the warehouse saw your face.” Elena’s stomach tightened. “So?” “So that makes you a target now.” She stepped out slowly. “Great.” Adrian led her inside the building. The lobby was quiet at this hour, but the guards immediately straightened when they saw him. “Sir.” “Clear the top floor,” Adrian ordered calmly. “Yes, sir.” Elena followed him to the private elevator again. This time, the ride felt very different. She had just been shot at. Because of him. When the elevator doors opened, they stepped into Adrian’s penthouse office. The city lights stretched endlessly through the massive glass windows. Elena walked toward the window slowly. “This place is ridiculous.” Adrian removed his jacket and placed it on the chair. “You’ll stay here tonight.” She turned quickly. “Excuse me?” “It’s safer.” “I’m not staying in your penthouse.” Adrian raised an eyebrow. “You’d rather go home where those men can find you?” Elena opened her mouth. Then closed it again. He had a point. She sighed. “Just tonight.” Adrian nodded. “Just tonight.” Silence settled in the room for a moment. Then Elena looked at him again. “You still haven’t answered my question.” “Which one?” “Why those men were attacking your warehouse.” Adrian walked toward the window beside her. For a long moment, he simply looked out at the city. Then he spoke quietly. “Because someone wants my empire.” Elena crossed her arms. “And you think they’re going to start a war to get it?” Adrian turned toward her. “No.” His eyes were cold again. “I know they will.” Elena studied him carefully. For the first time, she realized something important. Adrian Volkov wasn’t just a ruthless billionaire. He was a man standing at the center of something far bigger. Something deadly. And somehow… She had just become part of it.
