My heart hammered so hard I felt it in my throat, in my teeth, in the pulse between my legs.
“Why do you refuse to listen to me?” The words came out trembling, but I forced them anyway. “Do you even know what I came here to say? Or do you just hate the sight of me now?”
He laughed, low and bitter, the sound scraping across my skin. “You poisoned Danika. A gunshot meant for me. And you stand there asking why I dislike you?”
“I didn’t do any of it!” My fists shook at my sides.
“I’m sick of being your villain when I’ve done nothing.”
“Then tell me where you went that day.” His voice dropped, deadly quiet. “Because I know you left the palace.”
I sealed my lips. Blank. Cold. He would only twist whatever truth I gave him. He’d already decided I was guilty; why feed the fire?
