The Weight of Unspoken Words

2224 Words
The world hummed with the quiet yearning of untold stories, a symphony of hearts aching to unburden themselves. Each soul, a singular, vibrant hue, painted on the vast canvas of humanity, deserving of love's soft embrace, a sturdy hand to steady them through life's relentless squalls. For even in the fiercest tempest, beauty often lay hidden, whispering from the earth, dancing on the air, flowing through water's depths, and blazing within the heart's fiery core. This searing desire, this quiet resistance to voice the truth bubbling within, could not, would not, remain caged forever in this boundless expanse. It might smolder, unseen, in the depths of another’s gaze. Our deepest emotions, cloaked in invisibility, might remain unspoken, lost even from the loftiest mountain peaks. Yet, on a particular night, steeped in a toxic stillness, a raw, lacerating pain clawed at me, leaving me adrift on an isolated island of trauma, desperate for a therapeutic light to banish the perpetual twilight. I found myself adrift in a night punctuated by a barrage of questions. Why? Am I truly the sole cartographer of this bewildering path to righteousness? No haven existed, no sanctuary to wage war against the encroaching struggles that threatened to consume my very existence within a universe whose trajectory remained an enigma. What form did time take? How did it escape my grasp, a fleeting whisper on the wind? When love cast its gentle glow, all burdens seemed to lift, the world growing lighter. Day and night, mere transient seasons, failed to capture the true essence of life. For hope and uncertainty, like steadfast companions, walked hand-in-hand through the lush vibrancy of summer and the stark chill of winter. We each carried within us a complex tapestry of opposing forces: the shadow and the light, the dissonant and the harmonious. What, then, would become of me, I wondered, if you, in your weary despair, were to abandon me, to withhold the helping hand I so desperately needed in my struggles? Twice, I had faced the precipice with unyielding courage. Now, I implored all to embrace equality and love, to peer into the depths of our own lives, to speak with unflinching honesty about reality, to demand equal justice for every soul. If this nascent adulthood had taught me anything, it was that I would soon stand as a beacon, guiding others through the labyrinth of reality, equipping them with the tools for success. Echoes of Home, Whispers of a New Beginning Despite the arduous lessons etched upon my soul, my mother, siblings, and father remained the undeniable threads of my existence, an unbreakable genetic tapestry. I knew, with an unshakeable certainty, that I would soar beyond the confines of my origins, my ingrained perspectives evolving, shifting towards a profound positivity. Every obstacle, every setback, I would view as a trial, a test of my burgeoning strength. I would rather endure this present nightmare than ever return to that suffocating pit of hell. Lost in the quiet solitude of the house, I spoke to myself, a dreamy monologue echoing through the empty rooms, when Dad’s voice, a lifeline, broke through. "Hello, Salama! How are you, my little love charmer? I hope you're feeling good?" His voice, a gentle current, flowed through the phone. I could almost hear the faint strain of the lullaby he used to hum in my childhood, a familiar melody meant to soothe, to preempt the inevitable wellspring of tears that would surely follow if I attempted to articulate the depths of my turmoil. "Good afternoon, sir. I'm fine. I'm sorry for disturbing you; the network wasn't great here. I was trying to reach out, but the calls kept failing," I replied, a thread of regret weaving through my words. "My baby, don't worry. I understand," he reassured me, his voice a balm. "I called to check up on you and to see if you enjoyed your night in the new place." "I'm fine, sir," I admitted, the words tumbling out, "but my night was filled with nightmares. I woke up scared; it was dreadful." "That's normal, dear. You were burdened with pain and stress. Anxiety and depression might be part of it," he explained, his voice unwavering. "But don't overthink it; I will be with you soon, and everything will be alright. If you ever feel lonely and want to talk, please don't hesitate to call me. Make sure you eat, take care of yourself, and enjoy the moment. I saved some money in a cabinet on the second floor in the master bedroom; the door to that room has a pale golden color. Long-press the door button to open it. Go inside, check the black cabinet, and you will find the keys in the chest of the drawer. Take any amount of money you need until I return. Have a great day. Stay strong as usual, and always remember I love you," he added cheerfully, his affection a tangible presence. "Thank you, sir," I managed, a warmth spreading through me despite the lingering ache. A simple, "Bye," concluded the call. A familiar sting pricked at my eyes, but I swallowed the urge to cry, reining in the tumultuous emotions threatening to overwhelm me. The tantalizing aroma of my cooking wafted through the air; hunger, a fierce companion, gnawed at me. Yet, before succumbing to its demands, I needed to truly put my culinary skills to the test. Jollof rice, a vibrant symphony of color and scent, emerged from my efforts – a rich, reddish-orange from the tomato paste and scotch bonnet, a visual delight. The taste, a revelation, was enhanced by the earthy depth of dried catfish and the fragrant whisper of crayfish, each grain infused with the finest seasoning. The salt, a perfect whisper, and the harmonious blend of pepper and saffron danced on my tongue. I plated the meal, accompanying it with a soft, chilled glass of orange juice. The policemen, their uniforms slightly unbuttoned, belts loosened in anticipation, leaned forward, a collective eagerness in their eyes. They awaited their share, eager for a drink to accompany the feast, the very air thick with their unspoken desire, as if invoking Romans 8:19-22 in their anticipation. The second plate, equally steaming, was served with crisp, chilled water and more orange juice. A chorus of satisfied murmurs filled the air as they “c****m swallowed” the jollof rice. "Wow, you are the best cook of the year," one of them smirked, his eyes crinkling at the corners. A blush crept up my cheeks, my smile dissolving into soft laughter. "Thank you. Enjoy your meal." I grinned, retreating to the quiet sanctuary of my room. The Genesis of a New Path Beneath the vast expanse of the same stars, sometimes, all it took was a single kind word to ignite a faltering heart. This, I mused, should be a universal charity, a simple act to cradle the heart in peace and ease. In this intricate dance of life, we ought to normalize the giving of good, sweet, and kindest words, tossing out benevolent gestures like confetti to illuminate every fleeting moment. Good communication, impeccable character, and a positive approach to connecting with others – along with constructive perceptions and influences – should be the ethical bedrock of our interactions. So many of the conflicts that fractured our universe stemmed from a fundamental indifference in the pursuit of shared values, a process meant to be a delicate balance of giving and taking. Instead, selfishness and greed, those ravenous beasts, had ambitiously devoured all, refusing to reciprocate the very energy they so eagerly consumed from the world. Often, motivation alone served as the vital current for our existence. Society, in its wisdom, ought to embrace a pervasive positivity in every facet of life, extending even to the subtleties of communication and comprehension within our social fabric. Life, in its grand design, should illuminate that elusive part of heaven, a peaceful and positive synergy, to sculpt a better world. So many things had conspired to shatter my mindset, leaving me to believe I was some cosmic curse. Such was the armor that relentlessly hounded me, leaving my inner combat skills dormant. Every single day, I poured my very being into striving for validation, for credit, yet my family, with their sharp tongues, consistently made me feel like an utter waste of time. It seemed I was perpetually wrong, and insult was the only currency I ever received. Sometimes, the most insidious killers moved among us, devoid of guns or knives. Their attitudes, their words, were far more potent than any suicide bomb. They concocted the sweetest poisons, serving them daily, and we, with no alternative, consumed these meals, slowly, imperceptibly, being buried alive. Perhaps, the truest enjoyment of life lay beyond the confines of the cycle we were born into, a liberation from recycling the same stale garbage of particular norms. Within forty-eight hours, fueled by a few recommendations and some unexpected validation, I found myself capable of positive thought. It became undeniably clear: a new environment, brimming with positive energy and unbridled enthusiasm, was not merely desirable, but essential for my well-being. These burgeoning processes would sculpt a better me, shaping my adulthood into a landscape of positive leadership, meaningful changes, refined attitudes, and absolute control over my own affairs. No more retreating to old haunts, save for the occasional memorial visit, a reinforcement of how far I’d come. It was time to seize the freedom I had always craved, to forge the finest chapter of my life by embracing responsibilities that would profoundly shape my existence. I would not, could not, regress into the familiar surges of darkness, that traumatic dent of awful experiences. Now was the time for healing, for receiving therapy steeped in good vibes and cooperative analogies, poised at the apex of hope and prosperity. I would construct a system, uniquely mine, something no one could ever wrest from me again. But this grand ambition required allies, good people. My father, undeniably, stood as my primary pillar of support. Was he, however, enough to navigate these uncharted waters, to bring these dreams to fruition? I needed good friends, trustworthy companions, and dedicated team members. I had to embark on a quest to find them, for they were integral to achieving my aspirations. As I savored my lunch, a silent conversation unfurled within me. I had found myself. I had unearthed a purpose to live. The haunting apparitions of suicidal thoughts receded, vanishing into the ether. I began to meticulously rearrange my life, patterning new processes, strategizing progress, organizing fresh schedules, sketching out plans, delving deeper into analysis, meticulously sifting through all that would positively suffice my burgeoning spirit. It Was A New Dawn, Dad called again before bedtime, a familiar check-in. He told me not to fret about school, assuring me he'd be around soon, urging me to await his arrival. Later, as I watched a love story unfold on screen, the protagonist, a young man, effortlessly flirted with his crush: "Hello, you look so beautiful, and I can't help myself but tell you." A jolt of recognition. Boom! "That," I chuckled aloud, "was precisely what the young man said to me this morning. I guess he stole the line from this movie. Kudos to him, though." Talking to myself had become my most cherished indulgence. I hoped, fervently, that it was a mark of normalcy, not madness. Suddenly, in the dead of night, lost in the film's embrace, I sprang from the bed. The policemen! Dinner! I hastened to the kitchen, microwaving the remnants of lunch. The food, ready in moments, was served to the officers before I returned to my movie. I grabbed juice and snacks from the fridge, settling back in, relishing the film's conclusion. After the credits rolled, I showered, then knelt on my prayer mat, seeking solace before bed. The night embraced me in a peaceful slumber, devoid of nightmares. I awoke early to the insistent ring of a bell, performed my morning prayers, and drifted back to sleep. By nine in the morning, the robust voices of the policemen, punctuated by hearty laughter, roused me, my stomach growling in protest. I stepped onto the balcony, offering my greetings. They responded in a harmonious chorus of cheers. My gaze drifted towards the street. There he was – the same young man from the previous day, at my gate, jogging, a sheen of sweat on his brow, heading towards the same house he had entered before. His eyes met mine, and he waved. I waved back. He was, undeniably, a handsome young man: tall, with rich, dark chocolate skin, an Afro crowning his head, and a confident swagger in his steps. I liked him. I sensed he would be a genuinely kind soul, someone I wouldn't mind having as a friend, perhaps for the very first time. "Hello, please what would you love to eat for breakfast?" I asked the policemen. "Anything please," one replied, "And thank you for the meal you served yesterday." The other, a mischievous twinkle in his eye, added, "For your sweet meal, I wouldn't mind having me at your service for a very long time. Thank you for the meal, it was a delicacy." "It's my pleasure. Thank you too," I responded, a cheerful lilt in my voice.
