The knock on Elara's office door came at exactly 3:47 PM. She didn't need to look up to know who it was.
"Come in."
Liam Calvert stepped into her doorway like he owned the space. Gone were the sunglasses, revealing pale blue eyes with shadows that spoke of sleepless nights. He'd traded his usual uniform for dark jeans and a black sweater that clung to his shoulders.
"Dr. Thorne."
"Mr. Calvert. What can I do for you?"
"I wanted to discuss my grade." He stepped inside and closed the door—not completely, but enough to create the illusion of privacy.
"The C minus stands. The assignment was clear, and you chose to ignore it."
"Did I?" He moved closer. "The assignment was to draw the human form honestly, to capture what I see and what I feel. Isn't that exactly what I did?"
Elara felt heat rise in her cheeks as she remembered the drawing locked in her desk drawer. She'd looked at it a dozen times since Monday, trying to understand how he'd captured details he couldn't possibly have seen.
"What you did was create a sexualized image without consent. In any professional setting, that would be harassment."
"And what if the subject gave consent?"
The question hung in the air like a challenge.
Instead of answering, he reached into his bag and pulled out several sheets of paper. Sketches, all in the same confident charcoal strokes.
"I've been drawing every day since Monday. Trying to understand what you meant about honesty and emotional resonance."
Against her better judgment, Elara leaned forward to examine his work. The technical improvement was remarkable, but it was the emotional depth that took her breath away. A self-portrait that captured not the golden boy everyone saw, but someone haunted, desperate to break free. And here, on the bottom sheet, was another drawing of her.
This one was different; no less intimate, but somehow more respectful. He'd drawn her lost in thought, hair loose, expression soft and unguarded. Beautiful, masterful, and completely inappropriate.
"Mr. Calvert—"
"Liam. When it's just us, could you call me Liam? Please?"
She looked up to find him watching her with devastating intensity.
"This has to stop. The drawings, the... whatever this is. I'm your professor. There are boundaries..."
"Boundaries you've never crossed?" The question was soft but hit like a physical blow.
How could he possibly know about Sebastian? About the way her ex had manipulated their professional relationship?
"I'm asking if you've ever felt something for someone you weren't supposed to feel it for." He moved around her desk, and she had to tilt her head back to maintain eye contact. "If you've ever wanted something you knew you couldn't have."
He was close enough that she could see the faint scar through his left eyebrow. When he reached out to touch her cheek, she didn't pull away.
"I'm asking if you feel it too."
Instead of standing up, putting distance between them, Elara found herself leaning into his touch.
"This is insane," she whispered.
"Yeah. It is."
His hand slid into her hair, tilting her head back as he leaned down. For a moment they stayed frozen, balanced on the edge of a precipice.
The sound of footsteps in the hallway shattered the moment. They sprang apart just as a knock sounded.
"Dr. Thorne?" Maya's voice called. "Do you have a minute?"
Elara's heart pounded as she smoothed her hair with shaking hands, painfully aware of Liam standing behind her shoulder, his breathing as ragged as her own.
"One moment," she called, then turned to face him. His eyes were dark with frustrated desire.
"We can't," she whispered, but even as she said it, she knew it was too late.
Liam gathered his drawings, his fingers brushing hers as he reached for the last sketch.
"Keep it," he said quietly, nodding toward the portrait. "Consider it extra credit."
And then he was gone, leaving Elara alone with her racing heart and the lingering scent of his cologne.
She was in trouble. Deep, dangerous, career-ending trouble.
And God help her, she'd never wanted anything more.
