EP.2 Sparking the Fire
"You have no right to treat me like this! I have things to do, take me home right now!"
The small woman spun around, glaring. She wanted to scream at the unfeeling man! What kind of terrible day was this, to encounter someone like him! She'd just graduated, was planning her career, and in a few weeks, she'd even planned to surprise her family in Thailand. And now he'd brought her to this island in the middle of nowhere for what?!
"Dream on! You'll stay here with me until Charles's world is utterly ruined!"
He said with a mocking smile, as if he was proud to have made her so angry her face flushed.
"What?! You're crazy!"
She cursed him, beyond her patience. Her fair face was now crimson with extreme anger. But did Chris care? He knew exactly why he brought her here. To make Charles suffer the most, he'd have to gain control over this woman before Charles did... just like Charles had caused his sister so much pain.
"Take her away."
The man opened the door and ordered Chalee, who was standing outside. Marina took a deep breath. She pulled herself together, assessing everything around her. This man, whose name she still didn't know, likely had a quite dangerous profession, as he had subordinates everywhere. From the beach she could see, men in black suits stood guard. It seemed she'd have to find a way to get help on her own. So, she couldn't just keep yelling; that would ruin her plan. But how would she get help when her phone was in his hand!
"Yes, sir."
"Go rest downstairs. I have work to do."
He told her in a calm tone. He was surprised to see the small woman standing silently. He guessed she must be thinking something, but he let her. Because all she could do was think. This entire island was filled with his people.
"How long will you keep me here?"
Having realized that yelling wouldn't achieve anything, and that this stern-faced mafia boss wouldn't let her go easily, Marina, who was never one to back down, began to devise a plan to escape the island herself.
"Until I'm satisfied."
Chris replied stonily. Her small face clearly scrunched up in displeasure upon receiving an answer she didn't like. Nevertheless, Chalee came to escort her after his boss nodded. Marina obediently followed Chalee out. Throughout the walk to the room, Marina was constantly trying to figure out an escape route. But it seemed this was a very private island; there wasn't a single person wandering around!
"This is your room. Please make yourself comfortable. Someone will bring you food shortly."
"Chalee, who did you bring...?"
Both Chalee and Marina turned at the sound of the voice. Marina smiled with hope when she saw a blonde woman approaching, but her smile immediately vanished when the woman looked at her with disapproval! And she even looked her up and down! Huh! There wasn't a single normal person on this island.
"The boss's new acquaintance. If there's nothing else, I'll excuse myself."
Tina looked at Marina with disdain again after hearing the answer from Chris's trusted subordinate.
"So, his new woman, huh?"
The words from the woman in front of her made Marina's face flush. It wasn't hard to guess what the woman's status was. She was good-looking, but merely someone this man had brought to stay with him! Not a gentleman at all!
"Hmph... don't assume every woman is like you."
Marina retorted sharply. Her large, round eyes secretly watched the phone tucked into Tina's shorts, never leaving it. This was her chance to escape!
"You! Don't think that just because you're new, Chris will fall for you. Remember that I've been with him for a long time. You should know who came first!"
Tina spoke to Marina with envy, looking at the perfect face of the woman in front of her. She had been with Chris for almost two years because she was so attentive. As for the others he brought from the city, they didn't last as long as her. When he got bored, he sent them back. She was the only one he allowed to stay here. Tina looked at the woman in front of her with unease. This girl looked beautiful, well-bred. She was afraid he would become completely infatuated with this new acquisition.
"Oh, I'm not that Chris's woman, so you can relax. Oh... there's something on your face. Let me get it off for you."
In reality, Marina wasn't interested in the conversation Tina was having at all. She pretended to pick something off Tina's face while subtly using her other hand to gently pull the phone out of Tina's pocket.
"What! Don't mess with me!"
Tina backed away distrustfully, but it was too late. Marina had successfully stolen Tina's phone.
Inside the Bedroom
Marina spent some time trying to unlock the phone by guessing numbers, but without success. She then decided to call her friend to ask her to tell Charles everything that had happened. At first, Marina hesitated for a long time about whom she should tell—her family or the source of the problem, Charles. Marina realized she didn't want her family to suffer because of these men's foolishness. Therefore, Charles would have to be the one responsible if he truly caused Mr. Chris's sister to die. It would be reasonable for him to be the one to help her get out.
"Hello, Green."
The only person Marina could ask to tell Charles was Green, her close friend.
(Who is this? Rena? Hey, where have you been? I called you, but you didn't answer. And whose number are you calling from now?)
Her friend immediately began scolding her when she recognized her voice.
"I don't have time to explain now, but can you help me with something? Contact Charles for me."
(Why don't you contact him yourself? Isn't he pursuing you?)
Marina asked her friend to tell Charles that she had been taken by someone named Chris. Green, her dear friend, was very surprised but could do nothing better than to tell Charles about all the events that had transpired. Marina pleaded with her friend not to let her family know about this under any circumstances and emphasized that Charles should come help her as soon as possible. She didn't want to endure being there for another second!
Escalation
Two hours passed.
Chris sat reading important documents in his office, his face tense, for almost two hours. Normally, he spent most of his time on this island. But if there were important matters, he would sometimes take a boat to attend events. He had bought this island from an investor. Although it wasn't far from the city, it was full of tranquility. And for someone in a dangerous profession like him, being in a place like this was the safest.
Knock, knock, knock.
"Come in."
"There's big trouble, sir."
Chalee said with an anxious voice. He had just received urgent news about a sudden problem.
"What is it?!"
Chris replied, his eyes still fixed on the documents in front of him.
"Warehouse Zone B has been bombed, all three warehouses. We suspect it's Charles's doing. CCTV footage shows his subordinates carried it out, sir."
Thud! The thick pen was dropped before his handsome face looked up. Why would Charles suddenly bomb his warehouses? Or did he know that he had taken that woman? And how would he know, when he hadn't even told him yet!
"How much damage?"
He answered, his face grim. He had only recently stocked those three warehouses a few days ago.
"Uh, almost a hundred million."
His large hand clenched the pen tightly! He thought there must be something fishy going on. Realizing this, the tall figure stood up to his full height before striding quickly to find someone, hoping to verify something.
Tina's Realization
On Tina's side, she paced frantically around the house, having searched for her phone for over an hour without success. Coincidentally, Chris was walking downstairs, and he found her.
"What are you doing?"
He asked her when he noticed his favored companion searching for something near the living room sofa.
"Mr. Chris! Uh, I am looking for her phone. I don't know where I dropped it."
Chris's brows furrowed tightly. The tall man easily pieced together the story. He began to be sure that Tina's phone wasn't lost; someone had stolen it! And it was none other than Marina. That's why Charles had so quickly attacked his warehouses without warning. And he could immediately guess that within the next few hours, Charles would surely be storming this place!
Hmph, that mischievous girl! It seemed he would have to do something to subdue such a stubborn person. He hadn't even started the game, and she had already helped him begin... Thank you very much, you mischievous girl. He would make her pay for the hundred million that she had effectively cost him, just you wait!
