Chapter 2

Isabella sighed and leaned back against the window frame, trying to push the thoughts away. Her breakup with David still haunted her, its echoes fresh and painful. She had tried to bury it, to move forward and build a new life, but the wound was still raw. Writing, once her escape, had become her struggle. Words felt distant, like an old language she had forgotten how to speak. This retreat was supposed to be a fresh start, a place to heal. But deep down, she wasn’t sure if she could. Just then, the sharp ring of her phone cut through the quiet room, pulling her from her reverie. She glanced at the screen, smiling when she saw the name. Sophia. Sophia had been her childhood best friend, the one person who had always understood her, even when no one else did. They had stayed in close contact over the years, texting and calling frequently, especially during the more difficult times in Isabella’s life. Even though they lived in different places, their bond had never weakened. Sophia was always just a phone call away, and right now, Isabella couldn’t have been more grateful. “Hey, Soph!” Isabella answered, relief in her voice. “Isabella! It’s so good to hear your voice. How are you doing?” Sophia’s voice was upbeat, her energy infectious even through the phone. “I’m okay. Just… here. Back in Sonoma.” Isabella paused, gazing out at the vineyard. “It’s a bit overwhelming, honestly.” Sophia’s voice softened, though it still carried warmth. “I can imagine. Are you… okay with being there? Is it what you thought it would be?” Isabella chuckled lightly, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “It’s definitely quieter than I remember. I’ve been here for a few hours and… well, it feels like a lifetime ago that I lived here. Everything is the same, and yet so different.” Sophia understood without needing further explanation. “Are you staying with your parents?” “Yeah,” Isabella replied. “I’m just here for a few days, trying to figure things out. I don’t really know what I expect to find here, but… I need space, you know?” Sophia was quiet for a moment. “You deserve the time to heal. But, Izzy, I think you’re stronger than you give yourself credit for. This place, the memories—it’s all part of your story, right? Maybe it’s not about finding answers here, but just… finding peace.” Isabella smiled faintly. “Thanks, Soph. You always know what to say.” “Well, I’ve had years of practice,” Sophia teased. “But seriously, if you ever need to get away, let me know. I’ll be there in a heartbeat. You don’t have to do this alone.” “I know,” Isabella said, a lump forming in her throat. “It’s just… everything here feels so complicated. Ethan’s here, too.” Sophia didn’t skip a beat. “Ethan, huh? I know you two were close. That must make things even more tricky.” Isabella exhaled deeply, her thoughts drifting to the last time she’d seen Ethan. Their friendship had been so simple then, so natural. But things had changed between them, and she wasn’t sure how to face him again. “Yeah, it does. I haven’t seen him since I left. I don’t even know where to start, Soph.” “I get it. But remember, Ethan’s part of your past, too. You don’t have to fix everything right away. Just… take it one step at a time, okay? And don’t forget, you’re allowed to feel however you need to feel.” Isabella closed her eyes, appreciating Sophia’s words more than she could express. “Thanks, Soph. Really. I’ll try to take it slow. I just… need to figure things out.” Sophia’s voice brightened again. “Listen, I know it’s probably not the best timing with everything that’s going on, but I’m coming out to Sonoma next weekend. I’ve got a little break, and I figured, what better time to check in on you, right? We can grab some coffee, or lunch, or just hang out like old times.” Isabella’s heart lifted at the idea. “Soph, that sounds perfect. I’d love to see you. It’s been too long.” “I know! I can’t wait,” Sophia said, her excitement contagious. “I’ll text you when I’m on my way, but let’s plan for a real catch-up. You deserve it.” “I’ll be here,” Isabella said, a smile tugging at her lips. “I’m looking forward to it.” Before they could say anything else, Isabella heard the familiar sound of a knock on her door, followed by her mother’s voice. “Isabella? Dinner’s almost ready.” Isabella glanced at the phone, a little startled by the interruption. She quickly gave Sophia one last smile. “I’ve got to go. But I’ll talk to you soon, okay?” “Of course! Take care of yourself, Izzy. And remember, I’m always just a phone call away.” “Thanks, Soph,” Isabella said, her voice thick with gratitude. “Talk soon.” She hung up, placing the phone on the bed beside her. The sound of a knock at the door grew louder, and she stood up, stretching out the tension in her back. She could feel the weight of the moment settling in her chest. Dinner with her parents would be a welcome distraction, but she couldn’t deny the fact that Ethan was still here. The thought of running into him felt like a knot in her stomach. When she opened the door, her mother stood there with a warm smile, the faintest hint of concern in her eyes. “Everything okay, sweetie?” her mother asked, her voice gentle. Isabella forced a smile, trying to push aside the unease. “Yeah, just catching up with Sophia. I’ll be down in a minute.” Her mother gave her a knowing look but nodded. “Alright. Dinner’s ready whenever you are.” Isabella smiled and closed the door behind her. Her conversation with Sophia had given her a bit of clarity—there was comfort in the idea of seeing her old friend soon, of being able to talk things through. But she knew that when the weekend came, she would have to face her past, and with Ethan in town, it was only a matter of time before that happened. With a deep breath, she grabbed her sweater and headed downstairs, her heart heavy with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.
