THE SHATTERED DAWN

1540 Words
Dawn broke pale and cold over the mountains. The fog that once hugged the valley is now parting into long, ghostly ribbons, showing the ruins where the snake met its end Broken rocks were giving off a weak smoke, the air still buzzing with the aftermath of that explosive force Kaelen was standing on the hilltop, his breath creating little clouds in the cold air of the early morning. Aelinor was kneeling by the broken altar, her hand pressed against the stone, as if she could hear its pulse. Her skin had a soft glow that wasn't gone, just less bright, kinda like dying embers under a pile of ashes “You shouldn’t move yet,” Kaelen said quietly. She didn’t look up. “I’m not hurt.” “Not physically.” He took a step closer, his voice gentle but firm. “What happened last night wasn’t something you walk away from like a cut or bruise.”. Aelinor’s fingers traced the runes etched into the altar’s surface. “It’s strange,” she murmured. “I feel… heavier. But it's more straightforward, like part of me has finally stopped fighting.”. Kaelen crouched beside her. “And the other part?”. Her gaze lifted to meet his, the gold in his eyes barely visible, flickering softly."Still terrified," she said He gave a slight grin. “Alright.” Fear just means you're still you For a while, they both just stayed quiet. The only noises were the hush of wind weaving through the shattered pillars and the gentle drip of water somewhere down below. Aelinor stood up at last. Her gaze drifted toward the horizon, where the valley spread wide—a tapestry of green and gray stretching into mist. “The spirit said I carry the light of the ancients,” she said softly. “But light and darkness were never enemies. They were in balance What if wrecking the ancient stuff bothers them. Kaelen scowled.“You reckon the curse's just plain evil?” She hesitated. “I think it’s more complicated than anyone ever understood.”. He trailed her eyes to the distant mountains. The storm that had been looming on the horizon had passed, but there was still a slight glimmer in the air—like shimmering threads of light piercing through the darkness.“Whether it's complicated or not,” he remarked, “we still need to halt whatever's approaching.” Aelinor nodded slowly. “The next relic.” Kaelen's hand lightly touched the sword's hilt."And the next bit of the truth," he said They made their way down the mountain by noon. The path snaked its way through a deep gorge shaped by countless rains and long-lost skirmishes. Weird symbols were carved into the ancient stone walls—runes older than any Kaelen had ever seen Aelinor stopped to take a closer look."These weren't made by the villagers," she remarked. "They're a warning Kaelen squinted. “You can read them?” “Not exactly. But I understand them.” She touched one of the markings—a spiral surrounded by seven points. “It says, ‘Only the chosen flame may pass unbroken.’”. Kaelen raised a brow. “Encouraging.” She gave a slight smile, but it didn't quite make it to her eyes. As they strolled, the shadows got darker, and the fog thickened up once more. The air around here has a distinct scent of rust and damp earth. They made it to a stone bridge crossing a slim gorge. The water below was churning wildly, darkened by minerals. Kaelen took the lead, feeling the old stones crunch under his boots."Stay close," he called out. Aelinor stopped in her tracks, midway across, her wrist mark shone bright, throwing golden light through the fog. Kaelen turned. “What is it?” “Something’s here,” she whispered. Before he could even say a word, the air behind them started to shimmer. Out of the mist, there were these mysterious figures, all shrouded in darkness, their forms blending with the smoke and glowing lights around them. Kaelen snapped his sword out of nowhere.“More like the Warden’s type, huh?” Aelinor shook her head. “Nope.” These aren't the same. They're bound to me.”. The numbers edged nearer, their shapes dancing like the glow of a candle Someone halted just a few feet away and raised their hand Someone's voice bounced around the canyon, not really male or female “The heir walks again. The seal weakens.” Aelinor ’s pulse quickened. “Who are you?” “The Order that once served your bloodline,” the voice answered. “We guarded the relics, but your ancestors turned from the light. When our hearts broke, we did too Kaelen moved up, his sword at the ready.“So, why the sudden attack?” “We do not attack.” The figures’ forms wavered, their edges flickering. “We warn. The night is on the prowl for the ship. Relics seem to whisper secrets to each other. You cannot fight what you do not understand.”. Aelinor ’s voice shook. “Then teach me.” The mist hugged her, whipping around quicker and quicker until it twisted into a golden light spiral. The numbers melted into it, blending with her radiance. Kaelen reached out instinctively, but the light was too intense “Aelinor !” As the light dimmed, she stood right in the middle of the bridge, her hair draped with soft golden threads, her eyes shining brighter than ever “I saw them,” she whispered. “The seven relics. Not objects—souls. Pieces of something heavenly dropped when the world was just starting out. Kaelen’s grip tightened on his sword. “And now?”. She glanced up at him, her voice shaky. "They're waking up. Not everyone's keen on being discovered. They made it across the gorge just as dusk was settling in. The trail took them into a tiny valley where the fog lifted, revealing an ancient forest again. This one felt different, more mysterious, with trees that seemed to shimmer with a soft glow Kaelen was busy collecting firewood as Aelinor sat next to a toppled tree, her eyes lost in the dark “You’re quiet again,” he said, breaking the silence. “So are you,” she replied, echoing his words from days before. He smirked faintly. “Because I’m thinking.” “About what?” He locked eyes with her."Every time you handle something old, it either talks to you or it's like it wants to end us Aelinor laughed softly. “You’re not wrong.” Then her tone softened. “Kael… when the light burst last night, I felt everything. Your fear. Your strength. Even your heart.”. He froze. “My—?” “I think that’s how I controlled it,” she said. “Because of you.”. For a second, they both just stayed quiet. The firelight played peek-a-boo between them, waltzing on the mist's fringes. Kaelen diverted his gaze, giving the illusion of tweaking his sword belt.“So, looks like you’re stuck with me.” Aelinor gave a slight smile, the warmth behind her tiredness barely showing."I've been in tougher spots. He chuckled under his breath. But when she looked back at the woods, her grin slipped away. Something felt different in the air again—a subtle buzz under the breeze “Kaelen,” she whispered. He tensed up, gripping his sword tightly. "What's next?” From the darkness beyond the trees came a faint glimmer of movement—soft, rhythmic, like footsteps on wet leaves. Then a low, familiar voice floated through the air “You’ve come far, heir of the flame.” Someone stepped into the glow of the fire. That mysterious figure from Elaren's Hollow Now, their cloak was ripped, and their voice had a sense of urgency Kaelen got up, his sword ready.“Here we go again.” What do you want?”. The stranger's eyes landed on Aelinor ."To give her a heads-up. Relics whisper secrets to one another and to their opposites The shadow's moving Aelinor ’s heart pounded. “You mean—” “The one who forged the curse,” the stranger said grimly. “He knows the flame has returned. And he is coming.”. The fire was flickering wildly, sparks flying off into the fog. Kaelen moved in for a closer look at Aelinor , his face growing more serious."Alright, we're set then The stranger’s eyes glowed faintly beneath the hood. “Pray that you are.”. And just as they were about to chat again, the person disappeared, leaving behind nothing but quiet—and a soft whisper that felt like it was coming from the ground “The darkness remembers its heir.” Aelinor 's breath caught in her throat. Kaelen turned to her, his hand finding hers “What did they mean?” he asked. She gazed at the foggy woods, her face seemed far away, ghostly “That I’m not the only one carrying a legacy.”
