The footsteps grew louder, reverberating through the walls of the underground chamber. My pulse pounded in my ears as I clutched the journal and the black key tightly to my chest. The soft glow of the single lantern illuminating the space cast eerie, flickering shadows on the stone walls, making it seem as though the darkness itself was alive and reaching for me. The staircase spiraled into view, but no one appeared at the top. The heavy footsteps suddenly stopped.
