Night had fallen like a velvet shroud over San Isidro Road. The wind rustled through the mango trees outside, carrying a faint, eerie hum that made Selene’s skin crawl.
She sat on the edge of the bed, clutching the locket, eyes wide and ears straining. Every creak of the house sounded amplified, every shadow seemed to twist closer.
“Adrian…” she whispered. “It’s… it’s happening again.”
He stepped into the room silently, his presence grounding her. “I know. I can feel it too. The curse is waking. It knows we’re close to discovering its secrets.”
A soft whisper drifted through the room, barely audible, yet unmistakable:
“You cannot be together… you will not survive…”
Selene’s hands trembled. “It’s saying my name… and yours.”
Adrian knelt beside her, taking her hands in his. “The whispers are trying to scare us. Trying to make us doubt each other. Don’t listen. Focus on me. On us.”
The air grew colder. The candle flames flickered violently, casting shadows that danced like tortured souls.
A shadow detached itself from the corner of the room, slowly slithering toward them. Selene’s heart pounded, but Adrian’s grip on her hands tightened.
“Stay calm,” he whispered. “Breathe with me. Trust me.”
The shadow hissed, coiling around the furniture, its smoky tendrils reaching for Selene.
“You will lose him… you will fail…”
Selene shook her head, summoning every ounce of courage. “No!” she shouted. “I will not lose him. I trust him. I trust us!”
The shadow recoiled slightly, as if her defiance burned it. Adrian rose, dagger in hand, eyes glowing faintly in the dim light.
“This is our test,” he said firmly. “It wants to break us. But it cannot. Not if we stand together.”
The whispers grew louder, forming a cacophony of voices that threatened to overwhelm them. Selene felt her mind strain, the weight of centuries pressing on her soul.
Adrian pressed a finger to her lips. “One moment at a time. One breath at a time. Focus on me.”
Selene closed her eyes, letting his presence anchor her. Slowly, the voices began to fade, the shadows retreating into the corners of the room.
When she opened her eyes, Adrian was smiling faintly, though sweat beaded his forehead. “You did it,” he said softly. “You faced it, Selene. You didn’t run.”
She breathed heavily, trembling. “It’s… it’s not over, is it?”
“No,” he admitted. “The curse will keep coming. But tonight, we proved something important: we are stronger than it, as long as we trust each other.”
Selene leaned against him, finally allowing herself a moment of relief. “Then we face it… together. Always.”
Adrian held her close, whispering in her ear: “Always.”
Outside, the wind carried the faintest echoes of whispers — retreating, but not gone.
And Selene knew that the night had tested them, but their bond had survived, stronger than ever.
