The morning was deceptively calm. Dew glistened on the garden leaves, and birds chirped softly as if nothing had happened the night before.
Selene knelt to water the small patch of flowers behind the house, the locket warm against her chest. She tried to focus on something normal, something ordinary — anything to keep the darkness at bay.
But normal had long since fled from San Isidro Road.
Adrian appeared quietly beside her, scanning the garden. “I can feel it,” he said, his voice low. “The curse isn’t limited to the house anymore. It’s spreading — to the land, to the air, to anyone who comes too close.”
Selene’s hand froze on the watering can. “The village?” she whispered.
“Yes,” Adrian said grimly. “It wants to isolate us, to weaken us. The shadows will reach farther than we imagined. We must be vigilant.”
A sudden chill swept over the garden. Selene shivered as shadows began to twist among the flowerbeds, creeping along the edges of the yard like living smoke.
“You cannot hide… you cannot survive…”
The voices were faint at first, then louder, echoing through the garden. The flowers wilted where the shadows passed, the air thick with cold.
Selene gasped, stepping back. “It’s attacking the garden!”
Adrian drew his dagger and held it firmly in front of him. “Not for long,” he said. “Stay close to me. Trust me.”
The shadows surged forward, tendrils reaching for Selene. She felt the mark on her wrist flare with pain, the crescent burning as if it were warning her.
“Adrian…” she whispered through gritted teeth, fear mixing with determination.
“I’m here,” he said, stepping in front of her. “Focus on me. On us. Say my name.”
“Adrian!” Her voice rang out, strong and unwavering.
The shadows hissed and recoiled, writhing violently before retreating to the corners of the garden. The flowers trembled but did not die completely.
Selene collapsed to her knees, panting. “It’s… it’s stronger than ever,” she said, voice shaking.
Adrian knelt beside her, brushing soil from her hair. “Yes,” he admitted. “But so are we. This curse feeds on fear and doubt. Tonight, we survived because you didn’t let it control you.”
She looked at him, determination sparking in her eyes. “Then we stop running. We face it — in the house, in the garden, everywhere it shows itself.”
He nodded, placing a hand over hers. “Exactly. Together.”
As they stood, the wind whispered through the mango trees once again, carrying faint echoes of laughter and whispers. The shadows had retreated… for now.
But Selene knew the battle was far from over.
The curse had begun to reach beyond the walls of the house, and if they weren’t careful, it could engulf the entire village.
And yet, despite the growing danger, she felt something powerful stirring inside her — a courage that only love and determination could ignite.
No matter what came next, she and Adrian would face it together.
