Chapter 14 – Lessons in Shadows

628 Words
The next morning, the village was cloaked in fog, the air heavy with anticipation. Selene stood in the garden, hands clenched at her sides, as Adrian paced nervously beside her. Elias arrived at the gate, carrying a small satchel filled with strange, ancient objects. His gray eyes were serious, yet there was a spark of determination that made Selene feel a strange reassurance. “Today,” he said, setting the satchel down, “we begin your training. The curse will attack in ways you cannot yet imagine. Shadows, whispers, even your own fears can become weapons against you — or instruments of its control. You must learn to fight them.” Selene swallowed hard. “Fight shadows?” she asked, voice trembling. “Yes,” Elias said firmly. “And not just shadows. Fear itself. Doubt. The curse uses them all. You cannot run, you cannot hide. Only understanding your own strength, and trusting each other completely, can save you.” Their first lesson began with focus. Elias instructed Selene to stand in the center of the garden and close her eyes. “Feel the air around you,” he said. “The energy of the curse is in everything — the wind, the soil, even the stones. Acknowledge it. Do not fear it. Let it pass through you.” Selene hesitated, but with Adrian’s hand in hers, she concentrated. Slowly, she felt it — a faint tugging at her soul, a chill that could have terrified her. Instead, she let it flow around her, naming it for what it was: a test, not a threat. “Good,” Elias said, nodding. “You felt it. That is the first step: awareness. The curse feeds on ignorance. Know it, and you take away its power.” Next, Elias handed them small vials of dark liquid — shadow essence, he explained, collected from cursed sites centuries ago. “Don’t fear what you hold,” he warned. “These shadows can harm you if you are weak. But if you face them, you can bend them. Learn to strike with intent, to command your fear, not let it command you.” Adrian took his vial carefully, eyes locked on Selene. “We can do this,” he said. Selene nodded, determination flaring. “Together.” Hours passed as they practiced, summoning and controlling the shadows, striking them with silver-tipped daggers, chanting protective incantations taught by Elias. At first, the shadows were wild, lashing out and dissolving into smoke that left Selene dizzy and disoriented. But slowly, with each attempt, she learned to command them — to make them bend to her will, not her terror. Adrian, too, showed remarkable skill, his centuries-old experience guiding him even when his modern life had forgotten it. By sunset, they stood in the garden, sweat-soaked, bruised, and exhausted — but triumphant. “Not bad for beginners,” Elias said, his usual stoic face cracking into a small smile. “But remember this: the curse will grow stronger. Shadows will come in shapes you cannot predict. Your bond will be tested, and fear will be your most dangerous enemy. Keep each other close, and trust without doubt. That is your greatest weapon.” Selene looked at Adrian, her heart swelling. “We’ll keep each other safe,” she whispered. “Always,” he replied, squeezing her hand. That night, as the village slept, the shadows gathered again at the edges of the garden. But now, Selene and Adrian were ready. And for the first time, the whispers of the curse faltered — uncertain, as if sensing that its prey had learned to fight back. The battle for their love had entered a new phase, and Selene felt a spark of hope ignite amidst the darkness.
