Chapter 9: Before Seven

1483 Words

Rose POV I didn't sleep. I lay on my side of the bed staring at the ceiling while the clock on my nightstand moved from ten-fifteen to eleven to eleven-forty-seven, and I counted every minute the way you do when your brain refuses to shut down. ‘Daniel Holt. Midnight tomorrow. Signed documents. Someone close to your husband.’ I turned the call over and over in my head, looking for a different way to read it, a different explanation that made more sense. There wasn't one. The contract was a private document. Three copies existed - mine, James's, and his lawyer's. I'd never shown mine to anyone. Not even Bella, who knew the broad shape of the arrangement but not the specifics. Which left James's copy. Or his lawyer's. Or Sofia. I pressed my hand flat against my stomach in the dark.
