One rainy morning when I was thirteen, my mother came to me and asked what I was doing, which was clearly nothing. “I’m bored,” I said. She went and got a tattered old Dean Koontz paperback and shoved it in my hand, saying “Read this.” It wasn’t a suggestion. Still, I put up a fight. “Read the first twenty-five pages, at least.” I finished the entire novel that day. Thanks, Mom. This story is for you.
During the writing of this story:
To my daughter Rhiannon – thanks for reminding me what it is to be a teenager in a small town in flyover country. To my son Payton – thanks for reminding me what it is to be a little boy with big energy and even bigger dreams. To my wife Dani – thanks for taking out the trash, bathing the dog and doing all the things I should have been doing.
Love you all…
