“What do we know?” I asked when I walked into the war room, filled with the alphas who were still fighting for me. Or at least they were royalist and loyal enough to the crown that they didn’t jump ship when I took over. And they didn’t have much love for the late king, so it's a win-win all around.
Did they like me?
Definitely not!
But I didn’t care, as I didn’t need to be liked to be a fair king. I just needed to be just and rule the way my father had taught me. I wasn’t sure I was going to be as good a king as he’d been – I was literally too damaged for that. But I wanted to honor the things he taught me and rule the way he did...
