The Unexpected Revelation

Driving a few car lengths behind Derek, I wonders what has gotten into me that I drives behind a total stranger. Albeit, I was driving behind this stranger and we were heading further away from town. Strange also was how he seemed to effortlessly carry that pile of bricks many hours ago. Didn’t anyone notice how strange that looked? How does a man his size with skinny looking arms and a lanky frame manage to carry without strain that large amount of bricks? The red tail lights drift to a hard right and goes off track into what I judged to be the path to wherever Derek came from. I am getting closer to finding out all about this stranger but was cautious enough to pause a few seconds before switching off my headlights, as I takes the same turn Derek had just taken a few moments ago. Still tailing this mysterious man, I spots the red tail light dwindle into the darkness. He stopped. Had he noticed he was being followed? Was he about to attack me? I panicked but remained still in the car. The red tail lights came on again and disappear into what I thought out to be a compound. I am here finally! Stepping out from my car and into the cozy breeze of the silent evening, I continues on foot to the fence of the compound. It was a wooden fence and didn’t seem to have been carved with any craftsmanship. Just logs of wood that seemed impractically put together, as if the occupants were expecting a home invasion from a feared nemesis. The wooden extension of the fence that acted as the gate entrance however didn’t have any locks. “So much for protection” I wondered to myself as I gently pushes through and slips into the compound. The compound seemed extensively large as I observed. “There’s no way only one person lives here” as I could spot other cluster buildings scattered across what she could imagine were barns under the dull moonlight. Standing significantly at the center of the compound was the large house. The lights were dimmed on the inside and there were none on the outside and squeezing tightly the name batch between my fists as I walks up to the door. Knock! Knock! I taps on the tall mahogany door but barely makes any noticeable sound to cause a stir to any of the occupants within the building. Knock! Knock!! Knock!!! I tap again, this time with a third tap for good measure as if the first two taps didn’t make any impression, the third one will be the magic charm. Still there was silence. No response from the inside, neither did it seem like anything moved on the outside. Uncertain if I had perhaps missed Derek on his way in, I look upwards and then turns around but jerks instantly with fright. There they were, three more strangers with eyes glowing in the dark. One of them seemed to be like a body builder in a boxing gym because he stood as a giant above the rest, his eyes glowed with a bright blue tone but the others beside him stared intently at me with their bright yellow eyes. Visibly shaken, I squeezes even tighter the name tag between my fingers as I musters the few words that hanged on the edge of my lips, “Derek Brunson. I, I…” I stammers before forcing out the sentence “I am looking for Derek Brunson please” “Who are you?”. The blue-eyed man cuts me sharply, it was James who I later know his name. He didn’t take nicely to strangers and worse when they were women. He didn’t enjoy their company but could tolerate a few of them considered they were werewolves. “Why are you searching for Derek?” a softer voice calls out from the trio, turning down the tension of imminent violence that seemed to hang about them in the moment. Finding my usual confidence in the moment announces. “I found what belongs to him and I know what he is. I know what you all are” as I stretches my palm forward to reveal the name batch within it. The third and still silent member of the trio lets out a deep growl it was Derek himself. I guess he didn’t like it very much that this nosy human had made it her business to tail him to their home, announcing that I knew their secret and had subtly threatened to expose them to the outside world. It angered Derek even more that he had put the group at risk and if trouble came, which it was in fact standing unafraid on their front porch. It will all be his fault. He hadn’t listened to Caleb about not wandering off into the woods all by himself if he ever felt the itch. Leaping into the air to the surprise of everyone, Derek charged in my direction, but is instantly hit off course by a big wolf that springs out of nowhere equally to the surprise of everyone and to the relief of James, Sarah and most importantly I of course. “Enough!” The voice yelled out at the whole group. There he was standing, covered in sweat and dirt with his eyes still burning red, I got to know he is Caleb, Alpha of the group. He wasn’t as big as the body builder I could evidently notice but he was large. With shoulders like boulders, his frame seemed cut out of the of a men’s fitness magazine cover. “Who are you and what do you want?” Caleb asks me with a heavy tone before turning to James “Get a hold of Derek!” “She knows what we are” Sarah responds with an air of concern in her voice. “Emily” Caleb says to the astonishment of everyone. “What? You know who she is?” asks James as he leans an injured Derek against the wall who had just being hit by something five times his size and triple times his strength even as a werewolf. “Yes” Caleb says, this time without any expression in his voice and the brightly glowing red eyes had dwindled into normal brown eyes. “Last week, after Derek returned home without his work cloths. I tracked down where he may have been and I found all the pieces of his uniform except his name tag. It took a while but eventually I sniffed out who had taken them, this woman standing at our front door – Emily.” he said “Let’s all quiet down and talk inside” Caleb says as he walks past me and pushes the heavy mahogany door. Letting me into the house, as Sarah followed behind me with James carrying Derek across his shoulders into the large living area.
