Chapter Thirty-Three Thief My cell door banged open and a deputy stood there glowering at me like I had just shot his dog. “Get up, Thompson. You’re being released.” I looked up. “I thought I was your best suspect.” The deputy didn’t respond, merely gestured for my hands, and then cuffed them behind my back. We trooped through the white hallways to the ‘dress out’ room where I got my clothes and personal effects back. I signed for the stuff, and then initialed the form, acknowledging that I’d gotten everything back. The escort took me to the public exit. The deputies made a few sour remarks about what a disgrace I was to the name of law-enforcement, but I ignored them. They were trying to get me to say something in their presence, but, as before, I exercised my right to remain silent
