Chapter Seven Thief The moon was high in the sky, and I carefully coiled up the siphon hose and looked at the three empty jerry cans. Stealing the gas out of the mayor’s car had not been easy, but I’d accomplished it. I put the cans in the motor pool garage and piled some junk around them and then headed out the access stairwell. The mayor’s driver, I knew, was in the habit of arriving late for his boss, and rarely did any kind of check. He jumped into the driver’s seat and usually left in a peel of rubber. If he stayed true to form, he would race off soon to meet his boss, and would either pick him and then run out of fuel, or, worse, he’d run dry while on his way to make the pickup.
