THE SURGERY DATE

*Chapter 8: THE SURGERY DATE --- “The surgery is scheduled for 7am, Friday,” Dr. Adebayo said. He slid the consent forms across his desk. “48 hours from now. If you sign, there’s no going back, Mrs. Okoye.” Chioma stared at the paper. Words blurred. _Donor Consent. Risks include death. I, Chioma Nwosu, voluntarily..._ Daniel stood by the window. Hadn’t spoken since the psych eval. Hadn’t touched her hand. Hadn’t said “thank you” or “don’t do it.” Just silence. Billionaire silence. “Any questions?” Dr. Adebayo asked. Chioma shook her head. Signed. Chioma Nwosu. The name felt final. “Good. Nurse will prep you tomorrow. Liquid diet only. No stress.” He smiled, kind. “You’re saving a life. Remember that.” They walked out. Hallway empty. 11pm. Hospital quiet except for machines beeping. Daniel stopped at the elevator. Pressed “Up” to the Penthouse suite he’d booked for her. Still didn’t look at her. “Daniel,” Chioma said. “Say something.” The elevator dinged. Doors opened. Empty. He stepped in. Held the door. Finally turned to her. Eyes tired. Guard down. “Come with me,” he said. Not a command. A request. Penthouse suite. Cold marble. Cold air. Cold man. He poured water. Didn’t drink it. “48 hours,” he said. “Then you go under knife for my sister’s mistake. My fault. My burden. And you’ll carry the scar for life.” “Don’t,” Chioma said. “Don’t make me regret signing.” Daniel laughed. No humor in it. “Regret. Clause 4. You can walk. Anytime. I told Dr. Ireti that.” He walked to her. Close. Close enough she could smell his cologne. The one from 2:17am in his office. “One more thing,” he said quietly. “One last request. Not in the contract. Not for ₦50 million. Not for Amara.” Chioma’s heart dropped. “What?” Daniel looked at her like he was losing her already. “Marry me for real. Tonight. One night. No contract. No money. No clauses. Just... us. Before Friday. In case Friday is the last time I get to call you my wife and mean it.” The room tilted. Chioma stepped back. “That’s not part of the deal, Daniel. You said no feelings. Clause 2.” “Clause 2 is dead,” he said, echoing her words from Chapter 6. “You killed it. I’m asking as a man. Not Mr. Okoye. Not the billionaire. Daniel. The man who’s terrified of losing the only person who chose Amara without being paid to.” Chioma thought of Victoria’s warning: _He’ll let you go too._ Thought of Ada’s hospital bill. Thought of Amara Jr’s sketch: 3 stick figures. Team Fight. She thought of her mother, dying alone, waiting for a donor that never came. “Why?” Chioma whispered. “Why now? Why me?” Daniel touched her face. First time. No money between them. Just skin. “Because when you said ‘I choose her’ in Room 12, you weren’t talking about the kidney. You were talking about me. And I’ve been alone since my parents died. Alone with money. Alone with buildings. You walked in and chose us. For free.” The elevator dinged again. Downstairs. Security shift change. Reality knocking. Chioma looked at the consent form in her bag. Then at Daniel’s hand, waiting. “I can’t answer tonight,” she said. Voice shaking. “Ask me again after the surgery. If I wake up... if we both wake up... then ask me again.” Daniel’s hand dropped. He nodded. Once. Pain flashed in his eyes. “Deal,” he said. “After surgery. No contract. Just you. If you still choose us.” He walked her to her room. Door closed between them. But for the first time, it wasn’t a locked door. It was a door waiting to be opened. In her room, Chioma opened the sketchpad Amara Jr had left. Added one more stick figure. Labeled it “Daddy.” Then crossed it out. Wrote “Daniel.” Surgery in 48 hours. And a billionaire was waiting for her answer. *End of Chapter 8* ---
