BREAKING RULES

--- *Chapter 21: BREAKING RULES* 3:17am. Mansion silent. Chioma couldn’t sleep. Again. She padded downstairs for water, barefoot. Daniel’s hoodie still on her from today. She heard it. Sound of glass breaking. She followed it to his office. Door was open a crack. Light spilling out. Inside, Daniel stood in front of his wall. The wall with 50 rules. Framed. Perfect. His bible. Rule #50 was circled in red. _Do not fall for me._ In his hand, a hammer. On the floor, pieces of glass. He’d smashed the frame. Daniel’s back was to her. Shirtless. Scars visible in the lamplight. Shoulders rising and falling like he’d been fighting. He raised the hammer again. Smashed Rule #50 off the wall. Glass shattered everywhere. “Daniel?” Chioma whispered from the doorway. He spun around fast. Eyes wild. Not CEO Daniel. Not cold Daniel. Broken Daniel. He saw her. Saw the hoodie. His hoodie on her. Jaw ticked. “What are you doing here?” he growled. Voice rough. Like he hadn’t spoken all night. “I... I heard glass,” Chioma said quietly. She stepped inside. Careful of the shards. “Daniel, are you okay?” Daniel laughed. No humor. Just pain. He dropped the hammer. It clattered loud. “Okay?” He gestured at the wall. Rule #50 now missing. Just an empty rectangle. “I just broke my #1 rule, Chioma. The rule that kept me alive. The rule my mother died for.” Chioma’s chest hurt. “Why?” Daniel ran a hand through his hair. Frustrated. Tired. Human. “Because of you! Because you call me Igwe. Because you wear my hoodie. Because you smiled at a doctor and I wanted to burn the whole hospital down.” He walked toward her. Slow. Dangerous. Stopped 1 foot away. “Because I almost kissed you in the rain,” he said quietly. “Because I made you heart pancakes and pretended it meant nothing. Because my fake wife is destroying every wall I built.” Chioma looked up at him. “Daniel—” “Don’t,” he said. But didn’t move away. “If you say my name again I’ll do something stupid. Something Clause 7 says I can’t do.” The office was silent. Only their breathing. His chest was inches from her face. She could smell him. Rain + cologne + something broken. Chioma reached up. Hand shaking. Touched his bare chest. Right over his heart. Beating fast. Hard. “Then do it,” she whispered. “Be stupid, Daniel.” Daniel’s eyes closed. Like he was in pain. His hand came up, grabbed her wrist. Not rough. Desperate. “Chioma,” he breathed her name. Like a warning. Like a prayer. “I’m not a good man. I have rules for a reason. If I break them for you... I’ll never be able to go back.” “I don’t want you to go back,” Chioma said. Tears in her eyes. “I want you.” Silence. Daniel stared at her mouth. For 10 seconds. 20 seconds. War on his face. Then he made his choice. He let go of her wrist. Moved his hand to her jaw. Thumb brushed her bottom lip. Gentle. Like he was asking permission. “Rule #50 is gone,” he whispered. Forehead touching hers again. Like in the blackout. “But Clause 7 is still there. Tell me to stop, Chioma. Tell me now.” Chioma closed her eyes. Rose on her toes. Her lips brushed his. Soft. Testing. A question. Daniel froze. Then he kissed her back. Not soft. Not gentle. Desperate. Like a man drowning. Like a man who’d been holding his breath for years. One hand in her hair. The other on her waist, pulling her flush against him. Like he’d been waiting to do this since the day she signed the contract. The kiss broke Rule #50. Broke Clause 7. Broke every wall Daniel Okoye ever built. When they finally pulled apart, both breathing hard, Daniel rested his forehead on hers again. “I’m sorry,” he whispered against her lips. “I tried not to.” Chioma smiled through tears. “Don’t be sorry, Igwe.” Daniel’s whole body shuddered at the word. He kissed her again. Slower this time. Deeper. Rule #50 was broken. And Daniel Okoye had finally fallen. *End of Chapter 21* ---
