*Chapter 17: THE KISS THAT WASN’T*
The lights went out at exactly 11:47pm.
Thunder cracked outside. Lagos rain started pouring like the sky was angry. Power cut. Mansion went black.
Chioma jumped. Ada whimpered in her room down the hall.
She ran to Ada first. “I’m here baby, it’s okay—”
“It’s dark,” Ada whispered, scared. 8 years old after surgery = still a baby.
Chioma hugged her. “Close your eyes. Count with me. One... two...”
The door opened. Daniel stood there, phone flashlight in hand. No suit. Just black shirt, sleeves rolled up. Rain on his hair like he ran through it.
“Generator will kick in,” he said. Voice steady. Calm. “2 minutes.”
Ada reached for him immediately. “Uncle Daniel, I’m scared of thunder.”
Daniel hesitated. 1 second. Then he sat on the edge of her bed. Big billionaire, sitting in the dark, holding a child’s hand.
“Thunder is just clouds fighting,” he said softly. “See? Not scary.”
Lightning flashed. The whole room went white for 1 second.
And in that flash, Chioma saw it.
Daniel’s face, lit up. No CEO mask. No cold eyes. Just... tired. Gentle. Human.
He looked at her too. Caught her staring.
The generator hummed. Lights flickered back on. Dim. Yellow.
The moment broke.
Daniel stood up fast. “Generator’s on. I’ll check the medical monitors.” He walked to the door.
“Daniel, wait,” Chioma said before she could stop herself.
He stopped. Back to her. Didn’t turn.
The rain was loud. Thunder rolled again. Lights flickered.
Chioma took a step forward. Then another. She was close now. Close enough to smell his cologne + rain.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “For tonight. For Ada. For... everything.”
Daniel didn’t move. But his shoulders tensed.
“Don’t thank me, Chioma,” he said quietly. “Clause 7—”
“I know,” Chioma cut him off. Voice shaking. “Clause 7. No feelings. I know.”
Silence. Heavy. Breathing loud.
Daniel turned around slowly. Half his face in shadow. Eyes dark. Unreadable.
He was so close. Chioma could see the scar on his jaw. Could see his pulse jumping in his throat.
Lightning flashed again.
Daniel looked at her lips for 0.5 seconds. Just 0.5. But Chioma saw it.
Her breath caught. Heart stopped.
He leaned forward 1 inch.
Chioma closed her eyes.
The lights went out again.
But no kiss came.
Instead, Daniel’s forehead touched hers. Soft. Gentle. Like a question.
“Chioma,” he breathed her name. Like it hurt.
Then he pulled back fast. Fast like he got burned.
“Go to bed,” he said, voice rough. Broken. “Before we both break Clause 7.”
He left. Door closed behind him.
Chioma stood there in the dark, hand on her lips. Heart racing.
He didn’t kiss her.
But he wanted to.
And that was more dangerous than an actual kiss.
Clause 7 said no feelings.
But in the dark, with thunder and rain... Daniel Okoye almost broke his own rule for her.
