*Chapter 14: FIRST SMILE*
Ada opened her eyes at exactly 10:17am.
Chioma was asleep in the chair beside the hospital bed, head tipped forward. She’d stayed up all night watching the monitors. Rule #50 meant nothing when it was her sister’s life.
The beeping changed. Soft. Steady.
Chioma jerked awake. “Ada? Ada baby?”
Ada blinked slowly. Her eyes, big and brown like Chioma’s, looked around the bright room. Garden view. Toys on the shelf. Then they landed on Daniel.
He stood by the window, back to them. Phone in hand, talking low about stocks. CEO even in a hospital room.
Ada’s lips cracked into a small smile. Her voice was weak, hoarse from surgery, but clear:
“Uncle...”
Daniel froze mid-sentence. Phone still at his ear.
The word hung in the air like a bomb.
Chioma gasped. “Ada, that’s not— he’s not your uncle—”
But Ada wasn’t listening. She stretched her thin arm toward Daniel. “Uncle Daniel. You stayed.”
Daniel slowly lowered his phone. Hung up without saying goodbye. He turned around.
His face was blank. CEO mask. Perfect. Untouched.
But Chioma saw it. The way his throat moved when he swallowed. The way his hand clenched at his side like he was holding himself together.
He walked to the bed. Slow. Like each step cost him something.
“Ada,” he said. His voice was rough. Not cold. Just... careful. “I’m not your uncle.”
Ada frowned. “But you paid for my surgery. Uncle Tunde said only family pays for surgery.”
Daniel looked at Chioma for 1 second. Pain flashed in his eyes before the mask came back.
“Your sister paid,” he said quietly. “I just... helped.”
Ada shook her head stubbornly. 8 years old and already a drama queen. “No. You stayed all night. In the chair. Like daddy used to before he...” She stopped. Her eyes filled with tears.
Daniel’s mask cracked.
Just a little. Just enough.
He sat on the edge of her bed, careful not to touch the tubes. Big billionaire CEO, sitting on a child’s hospital bed like he belonged there.
He reached out. One finger. Touched Ada’s forehead gently, like he was checking for fever.
“Then I’ll be your uncle,” he said. Voice so soft Chioma barely heard it. “If you want. Just for now. While you get better.”
Ada smiled. Real, bright, toothless smile. “Promise?”
Daniel looked at her, then at Chioma. Something broke behind his eyes.
“Promise,” he whispered.
And then he did it.
He smiled.
Not the fake CEO smile he gave investors. Not the cold smirk he gave enemies.
A real smile. Small. Crooked. Tired. Like it hurt to use muscles he’d forgotten.
It changed his whole face. Made him look 10 years younger. Made him look... human.
Chioma’s chest hurt. Her eyes burned.
This was Daniel Okoye. The man with Rule #50 on his wall. _Do not fall for me._
And he was smiling for her sister. Calling himself “uncle” for her sister. Breaking every rule he made for himself.
Ada grabbed his finger with her tiny hand. “Uncle Daniel, will you stay? Until I sleep?”
Daniel glanced at Chioma. Asking permission without words.
Chioma nodded, tears falling now. She couldn’t speak.
Daniel nodded too. He leaned back in the chair, Ada’s hand in his, and closed his eyes.
“Okay,” he said. “Uncle Daniel will stay.”
Chioma watched them. Billionaire CEO + 8-year-old girl. His thumb rubbing slow circles on Ada’s hand while she drifted off.
Rule #50 said don’t fall for him.
Chioma was already gone.
